That’s the way Janet Jackson goes
Amit Puri

SHE is considered as one of the most commercially successful female pop stars of eighties and nineties. Janet Jackson is the youngest of nine children born to Joe and Katherine Jackson, including Michael Jackson. She was always a tomboy as a child. As a youngster, she developed interest in all fields like dancing, acting and singing. She first appeared on stage in her brothers’ show in 1973. At that time she was just seven. In 1977, Norman Lear offered her a job on the CBS hit as Penny Gordon Woods on Good Times. After that, she appeared on a few shows, Different Strokes and A New Kind of Family. In 1982, at 16, she released her first album.

In 1984, Janet eloped and married James DeBarge. In the same year, she released her second album, Dream Street.

The album didn’t do well. She started monitoring other hit songs and worked intensively with songwriters and producers. Then came the album, Control that transformed her career. This album proved to be her first major hit.

In 1993 Janet made her own movie debut as the heroine in Poetic Justice, for which she was appreciated. That same year, her album, Janet, shot to the top of the pop and R&B charts.
With the release of her seventh album, Behind The Velvet Rope, Janet joined longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on a project that set out to tackle social issues like domestic violence and the AIDS crisis. Some of the sites that provide links to her songs are:
