Ranga's Toon Tales

A. Fujimoro

THE ousted president of Peru, A. Fujimoro who had taken refuge in Japan, visited Delhi in 1993 as head of state. He became the president of Peru, a Spanish-speaking country, even though he was of Japanese origin. Smart and fluent in Spanish and English, Fujimoro attracted the attention of the media and his visit was highly publicised.

His day was jam-packed with engagements which included a visit to Rajghat — the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. This is place that visiting dignitaries visit and for me it is a place where I can sketch a person up close.

When I had completed his sketch the protocol allowed me to present it to him for his signature. He was about to leave the place yet he took a little time to see the sketch properly. He then signed it with the remark "Very cordially".
