Abacus Abu counts to 10
Aditya Rishi

The count reaches 10

CALCULATOR named Later (to Mr Processor, the computer): "In abacus, every bead in the lower deck symbolises 1 and every bead in the upper deck symbolises 5. Counting 10 is similar to counting 5, with

This is the count of six, as read from the middle bar in the units column

the addition of the extra carry to  the column on the left. When one 5-bead from the upper deck is at the middle bar or the beam, denoting 5, push one 1-bead from the lower-deck up to the middle bar. This is the count of six, as read from the middle bar (also called the beam), in the units column (also called the 1's column)."

The lower-deck beads brought down and the second 5-bead, too, pushed to the middle

"Moving the lower-deck beads up one by one, the count reaches 10, with one 5-bead and five 1-beads in the middle. Bring all the lower-deck beads down and push the second 5-bead in the upper deck of the units column to the middle bar, near the first 5-bead already there.

Both 5-beads moved back and one 1-bead brought up from the 10s column. Read as count of 10 on the middle bar

Move back both 5-beads and bring one 1-bead up from the 10s column on the left to the middle bar (beam). Read this as count of 10 on the middle bar."

"Counting 5 beads on the lower deck requires a carry of 1 bead to the upper deck. Counting 2 beads on the upper deck requires a carry of 1 bead of the lower deck of the previous column."
