Centre to honour local farmer

Two Punjab farmers — Mr Mohinder Singh Grewal of Kanganwal village in Ludhiana district and Mr Sukhpal Singh Bhullar of Ghuman Kalan village in Bathinda district — will be honoured by the Central Government at a function in New Delhi on December 22. This function will be a part of Kisan Samman Week, being celebrated from December 17-23 by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India, in memory of the late Chaudhry Charan Singh, former Prime Minister. The week will conclude with the celebration of Kisan Divas.

Mr Grewal took to farming after resigning from the Navy. He carried out scientific farming practices at his small farm under the guidance of PAU scientists. From the beginning he followed diversified farming and undertook different enterprises like foundation and hybrid seed production in vegetables, fresh vegetable production, seed and fresh flower production, cash crops production and organic farming. He continued to update his knowledge and skills. For this purpose, he obtained training in bee-keeping from the PAU, in piggery from the Department of Animal Husbandry , in poultry farming from the PAU and in chick sexing from the IVRI.

He also underwent training in modern technology and agronomic practices for extensive growth of vegetables organised by Mashar Centre, Israel, on the PAU campus. Mr Grewal has been actively associated with the Punjab Kisan Club and was its President for eight years.

Mr Bhullar started farming 15 years ago. He acquired training in rabbit farming from the PAU and became a member of the Punjab Naujawan Kisan Sanstha. In 1990, he started growing kinnow and grapes. He successfully experimented mixed farming of soya bean and tomato contract farming with Pepsi earned him fame as well as money. Under the guidance of Dr Jarnail Singh Hundal, a scientist of the PAU, he has started growing chillies and has helped farmers in Mansa and Bathinda districts to shift from rice-wheat rotation to other crops.

Dr A.K. Mehta, zonal coordinator (zone I) ICAR at Ludhiana, said out of 20 farmers selected for this prestigious award in the country, five were from zone I comprising the states of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

In a congratulatory message to these farmers, Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, said they had won honours not only for themselves but also for Punjab and Punjab Agricultural University.

‘Reflections-2002’ a big draw

A state-level inter-college and inter-school article/feature writing contest, “Reflection-2002” was organised by the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, here. The topics ranged from professionalism and education to communication and technology. The contest received an overwhelming response from educational institutes from all over the state. The entries were screened and evaluated by a panel of judges from the specialised fields of computers, management and literature.

The contest was held in three categories: (1) MBA/ MCA/ B.Tech; (2) BCA/ BBA/ B.Sc./ BA/B.Com; and (3) 10+2 (all streams).

In the first category, Purnima of MBA-II from IIM, Phagwara, was adjudged the winner. Ramandeep Kaur of the DGC, Badal, and Sandeep Sharma of the Apeejay Institute of Management, Jalandhar, secured second and third position, respectively.

In the second category, Daljit Kaur of B.Com. (final year) from Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana, was declared the winner. She was followed by Sumedha Bhandari and Kinneri Mehta, both from Arya College, Ludhiana, in second and third position, respectively. Special prizes in this category were won by Deepak Kumar of the Apeejay Institute of Management, Jalandhar, and Vibhuti Bhalla of Arya College, Ludhiana.

In the third category, Beerinder Singh of DAV School, Ludhiana, secured the first position. Jiwanjot Kaur of BCM Arya Model School, Ludhiana, and Harkirat Singh of DAV School, Ludhiana, were declared second and third, respectively.

Special consolation prizes were given to Harpreet Kaur and Ravinder Kaur, both students of GNIMT, for their contributions to the contest.

Course for young farmers

Ludhiana, December 19
The Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, will organise a three-month training course in Integrated Agriculture for young farmers from January 6 to April 5. Matriculate farmers in the age group of 20-40 years are eligible for enrolment.

The aspirants for the course may submit their applications on plain paper to the Professor and Head, Department of Extension Education, by January 1. The interview will be held on January 2 at 11 am at Kairon Kisan Ghar in the university.

The candidates must bring with them necessary documents in proof of age and educational qualifications. The selected candidates will have to deposit Rs 500 as refundable security. There will be no tuition fee for the course. However, boarding and lodging facilities would be provided on payment.

Dr Kolar further added that young farmers of Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts could send their applications on plain paper to the In charge, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gurdaspur. A similar course would be organised in Gurdaspur on the same dates. Those who are not able to send their applications can also attend the interview on January 2, which will be held in Gurdaspur. TNS

Kids impress at fancy dress competition

Tiny tots of Prime-Rose Nursery School here participated in the school’s annual fancy dress competition. The contest began with a solo performance by kids clad in eye-catching dresses. The students were full of joy and confidence. Their dresses depicted the culture of various states. The school was colourfully decorated on the occasion. The performance of the Hippy girl, Miss India, Shaka Laka Boom Boom showed their hidden talent.

For nursery class, the first prize was bagged by Hippy, second prize by Magic Pencil and the third by Heer Ranjha.

For the pre-nursery, the first prize was won by Miss India, second by Ganesh Ji and third by Radha. Rest of the participants were given consolation prizes. Soon after the function, the refreshment was served and children danced to the tune of latest Punjabi pop music. The function ended with a note of joy.

X’mas celebrations in school

Sparkle Nursery School here celebrated Christmas in a very special way. The Christmas celebrations were merged with winter festival. In a story starting with the birth of Jesus Christ, followed by a session of snowfall, the celebration ended up with the singing of X’mas carols and a feast for the kids. Children sang songs like “We wish you merry X’mas” and “Jingle Bells.”

Kids were taught about winters, snowfall and mountains. Santa Claus was with the kids all the time and distributed X’mas gifts to the kids. The school was decorated with stars, bells and a Christmas Tree. A crib was also made where children could see “Mother Mary” carrying “Baby Jesus.”

Selections for Sur-tal on

The Sur-tal competition organised by the state government to promote Punjabi culture and tradition, got underway this morning at Ramgarhia College. Ms Harmmet Kaur, Principal of Ramgarhia Girls College, said the selection of non-professionals had been done in the morning. The competitions between the college students will start at 10 am tomorrow.

Traditional ‘suhags’ and ‘sithinias’ associated with wedding functions were included in the competitions.

The three-day zonal level competition at Ludhiana will see giddha competition on the second day and bhangra competition on the third and final day.

Prize distribution

The annual prize distribution function of S N Public High School, Indra Puri, Ludhiana, was held today. Mr H.S. Chawla zonal in charge, S.N. Mandal, presided over the function which started with the hymn,” Toon datar in sabh ton vadda ki koi sift krey sarkar...” A cultural show was presented by students.

Principal Kulwant Kaur highlighted the achievements of the school. Mr Bindia Chhabra, chairperson of school, distributed prizes.

Students with more than 70 per cent marks were given scholarships.

All set for Bar Association poll today

Preparations for the District Bar Association elections, scheduled to be held tomorrow, have been completed. A total of 1,473 voters will decide the fate of 24 candidates contesting for 15 posts. According to Mr Jaspal Chugh, Returning Officer, the elections will start at 9.30 a.m. and conclude at 4.30 p.m.

Voters would be required to carry a photo identity card to prove their identity, the RO said.

A number of candidates expressed their views to the voters during a debate organised by the Young Lawyers’ Welfare Organisation.

Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, the sitting Bar President, who is again contesting the elections for the same post, asked lawyers to provide him a chance to head the association for the seventh time. Regarding the construction of multi-storeyed lawyers chambers in the new courts, he said the government had agreed to provide half of the amount of the Rs 8-crore project. A major share has already been released by the government he said, adding construction work was likely to be concluded soon.

A former Bar President, Mr Hemant Kalia, another contestant for the post of President, alleged that Mr Dhanda, at the time of elections, made false claims regarding the completion of the chambers. If he is pursuing the matter so seriously, why has the project not been completed till today, he asked.

Candidates contesting for the post of vice-president — Mr B.P. Singh Gill and Mr Abdul Majeed Thind — also participated in the debate.

Mr Jagdeep Singh, Mr Kuldeep Singh, Mr TPS Dhaliwal and Mr Narinder Sharma promised to work for the betterment of the bar, if voted to power.
