Closing time limit for shops in SAS Nagar likely
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, December 18
For the first time ever, all showrooms, restaurants, dhabas, rehri markets and rehris operating in the township are likely to face closing time limit.

This was stated by the Superintendent of Police, Mr Harcharan Singh Bhullar, while addressing a meeting of traders and shopkeepers of the township at the Phase VIII police station here today.

Stating that he would take up the matter with the Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, the SP said he would write to the DC to consider a proposal seeking closure of all shops whether eateries or cyber cafes in the township by 10 pm. The demand was put up by the traders at the meeting.

The SP who also listened to the various problems being faced by the traders and residents, however, pointed out that there was a lack of cooperation between the trading community and the police in ensuring complete security of their shops.

Some of the traders present at the meeting also demanded that the SP should take initiative in taking permission from the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) to allow the residents to build large gates encompassing a complete colony or phase and deploy security guards there. The SP promised to write to the DC to request PUDA for a permission in this regard.

The traders also brought a large number of petty theft and crime cases that they alleged had not been taken cognizance of by the police to the notice of the SP, who said he would look into the complaints.

The police also made requests to the traders to get their employees verified by either the police or themselves to their satisfaction.

The meeting was called by the police to discuss security arrangements in the markets of the township in wake of a daring robbery that took place in one of the department stores in the main market early this week. The SHOs of the three police stations were also present and were directed by the SP to take necessary action.

Interestingly, no regulations have been laid down by the administration regarding the closing timings of shops in the township. When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, Mrs Seema Jain, stated that she would take an immediate decision on the matter in case there was a demand from the traders to regulate the closing time of shops in the township. ‘‘The only people who have contacted me for permission to keep their shops open till midnight are certain cyber cafe operators who have been given the permission,’’ she said. The DC also said the closing timing of shops depended on the market dynamics and shopkeepers themselves and could be regulated only if there was a demand for the same.
