Suitable boyfriend

FINDING a suitable boyfriend is now just a click away from the mouse. In fact, women, who want to kindle new romances, now have this wonderful opportunity, thanks to Greatboyfriends.com, a new US Website, of recommending their old flames to other potential mates. Founded by Jean Carroll, who struck upon the idea a month ago while answering readers’ inquiries as agony aunt for the US edition of Elle magazine, Greatboyfriends.com enables women to post pictures of their "ex-es," along with a candid assessment of his potential - "Too Good to be True (all my girlfriends thought I was nuts when we broke up)." And if you probe a little deeper, then you will find the all-important Mother rating ("He’s tender/grateful/understanding towards his Mom"), along with other telling personal details and the opportunity to correspond directly with the old girlfriend, or "Acquisitions Adviser."

Landmark judgement

A landmark judgement where a US online publisher was allowed to be sued in Australia will have implications for the Internet publishing worldwide and may force the closure of some Websites. The Australian High Court ruled that the mining businessman Joseph Gutnick could sue business news publisher Dow Jones for defamation in a Victorian court. The action related to material published on the Barron’s Online section of The Wall Street Journal Website. American publishers now fear that litigants will take advantage of favourable overseas laws and launch defamation cases outside the USA. Internet Industry Association (IIA) chief executive Peter Coroneos told The News that the parties who joined the High Court action - including The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Yahoo! and Amazon - indicated how seriously media players were taking the decision.

Horserace betting

Close on the heels of taking its lottery online, the Maharashtra government is all set to permit e-betting on racehorses. According to sources in the Office of the State Commissioner for Lotteries, the government will formally release the rules for online betting on horses and invite bids from agents for licences. The licensee will have to share the proceeds with the Maharashtra government and the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), which conducts horse racing at the Mahalaxmi, Mumbai and the Pune racecourses. Now, racing aficionados can register with the official racing Website incognito and place bets using pre-paid cards.

Speak @ in French

French is such a rich language that it now has, by state decree, two words for "@" — the "at" sign that has become a worldwide symbol for the Internet — but only one official way to pronounce it. A special commission struggling to defend French against the spread of English in cyberspace has decided that the popular e-mail sign can be named either "arobase" or "arrobe." But the august commission, which failed a few years ago to impose the name "jeunes pousses" ("young sprouts") for Internet start-up companies, decreed that the French should only call it "arrobe" when they give out their e-mail addresses. The problem is that most people say "arobase" — the traditional French name for the "at" sign — and have never heard of the old Spanish measure of weight "arroba" that the commission used to create its new term —Agencies
