Posters, banners banned in Bar poll

The returning officer of the Ludhiana District Bar Association has issued directions to all candidates not to stick posters or display banners on the court complex. Violation of the directive may result in disqualification from contesting the election scheduled to be held on December 20.

This is probably the first time in the history of bar elections. Following complaints from the various advocates regarding defacement of property and to maintain cleanliness on the court complex, Mr Jaspal Chugh, Returning Officer, banned sticking of posters and display of banners. Mr Chugh requested all the candidates to remove their banners and posters by 5 p.m. till December 12.

Meanwhile, the election scenario is heating up day by day. Mr Harish Rai Dhanda , sitting Bar President, is again in the race of becoming president. Mr Hemant Kalia, former president of the Bar, has also filed nomination papers for the same post. Mr K.K. Bagai has filed nomination papers as a covering candidate of Mr Dhanda. There will be direct contest between Mr Dhanda and Mr Kalia. Mr Sanjeev Malhotra, B.P. Singh Gill and Abdul Majeed Thind have filed nominations for the post of vice-president.

While for the post of secretary, T.P.S. Dhaliwal, Kuldeep Arora, Rajesh Bali, Narinder Sharma and Jagdeep Singh have filed nomination papers. Rakesh Bhatia, Amandeep Bhanot, Jyoti Saroop filed nomination papers for the post of finance secretary and for the post of joint secretary, Mr Sandeep Kapoor, Rohit Thapar and Birinder Singh Sekhon have filed the papers.

Mr Chugh said after scrutiny nomination papers of all candidates were found in order and candidates could withdraw their nomination papers till December 13.

MC demolishes illegal structures

Ludhiana, December 11
On the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation today demolished illegal structures on the Upkar Nagar road. The demolitions were followed by a dharna and demonstrations by residents saying that the corporation had demolished a religious structure. Lashing out at the Municipal Corporation, a Congress councillor of the area, Mr Rajoo Thapar and Mr Ramesh Joshi, a former general secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress, said the corporation was acting in haste as some people had a stay order from the court.

The police was present to prevent any untoward incident. Mr. P.K Garg, Municipal Town Planner, led the corporation team. Joint Commissioner, O.A.K. Sondhi reached the spot and assured the agitating crowd that he would personally look into the episode leading to the demolitions and recommend punishment for anyone found guilty.

SHO relieved

Khanna, December 11
The SHO of the City police station, Khanna, Mr Baldev Singh Brar, who has been transferred to Jalandhar range on the orders of the Jalandhar Zone IG, Mr S.K. Sharma, was relieved of the charge, here yesterday.

Mr Harbhajan Singh, Additional SHO, has been given the temporary charge of the post.
