Free medical facility for ex-servicemen at GMCH Chandigarh, December 11 As per the latest order issued of the Secretary, Medical Education and Research, Mr R.S. Gujral, free medical treatment to ex-servicemen pensioners and their dependents will now be provided at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Even though this facility was available to them at General Hospital, many a time there were allegations that the health staff refused to give them free medical treatment. “As per the directions of UT Administration we have already started providing free medical treatment facility to ex- servicemen pensioners at GMCH, and we shall provide them free medicines, whatever is available in our stock,” remarked Dr Raj Bahadur, Medical Superintendent, GMCH. The Chairman of the All India Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association, Mr Bhim Sen Sehgal, had taken up the issue with the authorities. He had even raised the issue of non compliance of the orders of the Administration, issued way back in 1989, to give free medical treatment to ex servicemen pensioners at General Hospital. There have been several cases, where ex-servicemen had alleged that free treatment was refused by the General Hospital staff and as such they were made to pay for registration fee, medical examination and for the medicines. The matter had also been brought to the notice of the Administration. The Director, Health Services, Dr C.P. Bansal, when contacted said directions had been issued to the hospital staff and ex-servicemen were being given free treatment. “ I admit there have been instances when some of them were refused free treatment , the reason for which was the ignorance amongst some of the staff about the order of the authorities in this regard,” admitted one of the senior doctor at General Hospital. |
