Dr Christiaan Barnard

Dr Christiaan Barnard DR Christiaan Barnard of Capetown, South Africa, who shot into fame for carrying out the world’s first successful heart transplant was in Delhi in 1976 to attend a conference related to heart and heart surgery. His visit to Delhi was not highly published and his movements too were not known.

Since I wanted to meet this unique personality, I chased him from venue to venue and found him in one of the hotels where he was to address a select gathering of heart specialists. As he drove into the hotel, I ran after him and succeeded in meeting him. I requested him to spare a few minutes to pose for me. He said he was willing, provided I finish up the job in five minutes. He sat on a sofa nearby and the sketch was soon ready for his autograph. He was satisfied and was happy to oblige me with his signature.

Dr Barnard is no more but his broad smile remains eternal.
