DIANA King is one of the most popular female reggae star. One of 15 children, King was born in Spanish Town, in St. Catherine’s Parish near Kingston. She grew up singing hymns in the St. Phillipo Baptist Church and at the same time was drawn to the music of Aretha Franklin, Patti La Belle and Chaka Khan. Her religious family didn’t encourage her for pop music. For her love of music, she ran away from her house at 13. Her first job was as a singer in a band that played in the tourist resort circuit. After a few years, she joined reggae group called City Heat and eventually left Jamaica to tour with Shabba Ranks as a backup singer. In 1990, she recorded with Junior Tucker for Stop To Start that was included on the album, Don’t Test. In 1993, an album of Bob Marley cover versions, Stir It Up, by a variety of Jamaican performers included a version of the title track by King. It brought her to the attention of music company, Sony. Her initial release, Shy Guy, crossed over into the pop charts in 1995, which led to the release of Tougher Than Love, which showcased her skills both as a singer and DJ. In 1997, Diana released Think Like a Girl that included hits like Say A Little Prayer, L-L Lies and Wicked. Apart from singing she also has the skills to write the songs. Now she is out with Respect, her latest album whose songs are topping many music charts. Her official site is www.dianaking.com.
