Panchkula skaters corner glory

Panchkula skaters cornered glory in roller hockey when they captured titles in both senior boys’ and senior girls’ categories at the 16th Sushil Kumar Memorial Haryana State Roller Skating Championship which came to a close this evening at Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula.

Mr D.S. Dhesi, Commissioner and Secretary Sports, Haryana, was the chief guest. He gave away prizes to the winners. Mr T.C. Gupta, president of the Haryana Roller Skating Association, said skating was the game of the future now.

Earlier in the finals, in the senior girls’ section, Panchkula outplayed Sirsa, 8-3. Amrita Singh, a student of Hansraj Public School, and Priyanka scored three goals each for Panchkula. Rayasha Rajput and Suruchi Chandel scored one goal each.

In the sub-junior girls final, Panchkula beat Sirsa 6-1, while in the junior boys final, Yamunanagar beat Panchkula, 6-1. In the sub-junior boys’ section also, Yamunanagar defeated Panchkula. Kaithal got third place in the junior boys’ section when they defeated Kurukshetra, 1-0.

Final standings: boys: sub-junior: Yamunanagar 1, Panchkula 2, Faridabad 3; juniors: Yamunanagar 1, Panchkula 2, Kaithal 3; seniors: Panchkula 1, Faridabad 2, Kurukshetra 3; girls — sub-juniors: Panchkula 1, Sirsa 2, Faridabad 3. Juniors: Sirsa 1, Panchkula 2, Panipat 3. seniors: Panchkula 1, Sirsa 2, Kaithal 3.

In the inline (point to point) speed events, Ambranash of Faridabad secured the first place in the 12 to 14 years section, while Pritam Saini of Karnal was adjudged first in the above 14-year section. Piyush Gaur of Faridabad got the first place in the inline time trial in the above 14 -year section.

Sahil wins gold: Sahil Bhagtiar, a class I student of Vivek High School, Sector 38, Chandigarh, achieved laurels when he bagged gold medal in the up to seven-year section in the sub-junior open weight category in the First International Kaate-do Championship-2002 being held at Chandigarh. Sahil takes training from Mr Vinod in the Saini School, Sector 38.

Cricket tourney: The team of the Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children (GIMRC), Sector 32, Chandigarh, trounced Nirdosh team by 171 runs in the Third North Zone Cricket Tournament of Mentally Retarded Children here on Sunday. GIMRC made 188 runs for the loss of two wickets with Gurpreet scoring 72 runs In reply, Nirdosh team was bundled out for just 19 runs. In the second match, Nirdosh team beat Ambuja Manovikas, while Aanchal team defeated Little Flower School.

The finals will be played tomorrow at Sector 16 Cricket stadium. Earlier the meet was inaugurated by Prof S.B.S. Mann, Director- Principal, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The North West Athletics meet of SIVUS India also began today.

Players congratulated: Mr M.S. Mann, Director Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Haryana, congratulated officials and players of the Haryana yoga team that won the overall general championship in the just concluded 27th National Yoga Championship at Patiala. Haryana players had won six gold medals, six silver medals and nine bronze medals in the above meet.

Billiards championship: Ankit Soni beat Akshay Narang, 3-1, in the junior snooker section of the XVIIth Haryana State Senior, Junior Billiards and Snooker championship here on Sunday at Panchkula. In other matches of the day, Amar got the better of Vishal, 3-0, Bhupinder beat Dushyant, 3-0. Lalit and Ravinder also won their matches with ease.
