Nelson Mandela

NELSON Mandela, the South African leader who spent over two decades in jail was in Delhi for the second time and this time as the president of South Africa. Perhaps one of the most colourful personalities of the world, Mandela despite his long imprisonment appeared fit as he moved from one engagement to another. Mandela, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, spoke of his country’s freedom and his admiration for Mahatma Gandhi.

At one of his busy engagements, I met him with the help of the protocol with the sketch I had drawn of him. A tall figure with colourful attire, Mandela was informal in his dress. He saw the picture I had drawn and readily signed it. Much pleased, he held it high so that the gathering could have a look at it before he returned it to me.
