Q. I have a computer
with P III, 500 MHz processor, 64 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD and Tomato 810E
chipset motherboard. Since last few days a message flashed on my
computer screen, reads, "Adjust CPU speed." Every time when I
escaped this, the computer functioned properly. This happened more than
a couple of times and after that when I started the computer, it didn’t
boot up. My computer assembler told me that it is the problem of
motherboard and I would have to get it changed. And motherboard (having
slot 1), which my processor supports, is not available in market. Please
give me a suggestion.
Ankit Singla, Patiala
A. I do not think
that this problem is occurring due to any problem in your motherboard.
This problem seems to be related the wrong BIOS settings and thus by
loading the fail safe BIOS settings in BIOS feature setup, this problem
can be sorted out easily. In order to load the fail-safe setting, hit
Del immediately after the system finishes memory check and this will
open the BIOS feature setup. Here you can load the fail-safe or default
BIOS setting. I hope this will solve your problem.
Q. I have Pentium 4 PC
with Intel desktop motherboard D854GLLY, 256 SD RAM, 40 GB HDD. My
problem is when I play delta force 2 game; the display in the games is
not good. But when I play games like Quake 3 the graphics are good. I
have onboard graphics card. So please help me solve graphics problem in
delta force2.
Gursimran Singh,
Kapurthala, Punjab
A. Normally onboard
graphic cards are not considered the ideal choice for using high-end
graphics program and in such cases only external graphics card are most
suited. I think for the best performance in games like Delta Force 2,
you may require an external 32 MB AGP card. However, you may also check
for the installation and proper running of Active X driver on your
system.
Q. I have P III 667 MHz
processor, 20 GB HDD, 128 MB RAM and all other standard peripherals and
Motorola internal modem. I have been using Win XP professional Edition
operating system from past one year and was not having any problem with
it. My Internet was working absolutely fine and was giving optimum
performance. When I logged on to the Internet a few days ago, I found
that it was not working fine. However, it was opening pages. But
whenever I used to click anywhere on the Webpage the following message
appears.
"Windows socket
error: Only one usage of each socket (protocol/network/address/port)
address is normally permitted (10048), on API ‘bind’." My ISP
is Glide. Please suggest a solution.
Manoj Khera, Sangrur
A. This error
occurs if an application attempts to bind () a socket to an IP
address/port that has already been used for an existing socket, or a
socket that wasn’t closed properly, or one that is still in the
process of closing. For server applications that need to bind() multiple
sockets to the same port number, consider using setsockopt (SO_REUSEADDR).
Client applications usually need not call bind() at all - connect() will
choose an unused port automatically.
Another possible reason
for this problem could be the presence of two entries in msconfig for
shellapi.exe trying to run at the same time. shellapi.exe is actually a
Trojan Horse and often cause this problem. You can delete this file from
DOS located in C Windows\ system. Now after deleting this file you will
notice errors in your Graphic adapter driver. Uninstall the Graphic
adapter driver and then reinstall it afresh again and this will solve
your problem.
Q. I have Windows ’98
and Outlook 6 installed on my system. I want to configure two e-mail ids
on it. My one e-mail id is aulakhraja123@hotmail and the other is
aulakhraja123@yahoo.com. My first id is working well. Now I want to
configure the other. Please help me to do this.
Amrinder Singh,
Abu Dhabi (UAE)
A. POP and SMTP of
Yahoo! are paid services now and for configuring your Yahoo! account in
your e-mail client you will have to pay for these services. However, you
can use some software like @nymail to check Yahoo! and lot other
accounts including Hotmail and Rediff all simultaneously. This software
works more or less like a normal email client and can really make
sending and receiving emails quite simple. @nymail could be downloaded
from http://www.tntsb.com/anymail.
Q. I don’t understand
when I switch on my PC the monitor gets yellow light after getting the
green light. And some thing is wrong with my CPU. Please tell me what’s
the problem.
Jagdeep Maini, Goraya
A. You need to
elaborate your problem like, does the monitor screen turns Yellow and
green or the power led changes colour as mentioned by you. However from
the face of it, it does not seem to be a problem of CPU.
Q. I want to use
Hyperterminal (a program in accessories of WINDOWS) to dial the local
telephones. Is it possible to do so? In my practical experience my voice
was not picked up/transferred to other side when I dialled other persons
telephone number through hyperterminal, though I could hear other
persons voice. Why was this so?
Kamaljeet Singh,
Hoshiarpur
A. Hyper Terminal
is basically a program for data transfer by directly connecting to the
PC of other person through modem. So, basically it facilitates PC-to-PC
connection through dial up networking. However, if you wish to use it
for voice, then you can dial the number and when the line connects and
the other person picks up the phone lift the handset and disconnect the
Hyper Terminal. I suggest that you should use Phone dialer instead of
Hyper Terminal for more convenience.
Q. I have an HCL PIII
866 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, 52XCD drive and Win ’98 SE. I had
installed Logitech Quick Cam express 6.0.1 on my PC. Initially, it
worked fine. I used it mainly for Webchat on Yahoo! A couple of days
back, I clicked on the Webcam icon and opened the Webcam to use it. It
opened but the place/screen which shows or displays the visuals being
taken by the Webcam does not show anything. It displays a message - The
"Logitech Quick cam Express" camera device is currently in use
by another application. The box underneath which shows the pixels
320*240 is also disabled. The application does not hang while opening or
closing it. The camera lead is properly attached to the USB port.
Focusing the camera with the outer ring won’t work. I tried
uninstalling and then installing it but that also did not work. All
steps for installing it are performed satisfactorily but it still
displays the same message I even disabled Norton Antivirus 2002 while
installing it but nothing seems to work. However, after installing the
Webcam onto the PC, the PC builds the driver database and tries to
test/focus the Webcam by displaying the visuals on a small screen. At
that point, the screen was totally black. Webcam tried to focus but the
screen remained black. Even the auto trouble-shooting mode in Webcam
failed to correct it.
Sunet
A. As the first
step in troubleshooting this problem, try uninstalling and then
reinstalling the driver for your Webcam. I hope this will take care of
your problem. However, if it does not solve your problem, then find out
the software you installed recently. It could be possible that the
software installed by you recently, might have some clashing with the
driver of Webcam. Uninstall that software and this would solve your
problem.
Q. I have 3 PCs whose
configurations are as under:
1) P4 1.6, Win 98 SE
OS, U8638 motherboard, 40 GB HDD with 3 partitions C,D,E 128 MB RAM,
mutimedia set, no 3D card,
2) P3, 933e
motherboard, 128MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, No 3d card, Win ’98 SE OS
3) P1,1.44 MHz,16 MB
RAM, 2 GB HDD, Win 98 SE OS.
I have connectix
virtual Playstation software (vgs, full). It works well on P3, works
slowly on P1 (obviously due to less RAM) and gives a message, "its
better to run it on a P2 class or later" (that’s also due to
speed of P1). But it’s not running on P4 and gives a message, "it
needs a Pentium-II class or later to run on" I want it to run on P4
too. Please" tell me how.
Aditya, Chandigarh
A. The message
"it needs a Pentium-II class or later to run on" does not mean
that this software will not run on P4 machine. You should ignore this
message and carry on installing it on P4 machine. I think there should
not be any problem in installing and running it.
Q. I have P III, 1.13
GHz processor with 40 GB hard disk, 4 partitions (C,D,E,F,H (CD)) and
Windows ’98 SE Operating System. My problem is my vendor installed
software (Nero Image Drive). Due to this, it shows one extra drive
(Drive G:) for CD. Now I uninstalled this software but it continued to
show this drive. Please tell me any method to remove this without
formatting my drives. Nero Image is also shown in the Control Panel.
Mandeep Tony, Nawanshahr
(Punjab)
A. Since you have
already uninstalled the Nero software, the drivers for image drive
should have been uninstalled simultaneously. Now try removing it from
control panel from the Add/remove program. Other option could be to
manually remove it from the system files.
Q. I have some
problems: 1. My PC is infected with newly discovered ‘kj’ virus that
makes its copies every time a folder is opened. Two files namely ‘folder.htt’
and ‘desktop.ini’ are formed every time a directory is opened which
makes my computer slow after some time. My anti-virus software does not
detect this. Kindly tell me the solution.
2. I have Celeron 500
MHz, 810 motherboard and 64 MB RAM. I want to connect Webcam to my PC. I
brought my PC to workshop and he told me that this 810 motherboard does
not support USB port although there is a jack of USB port in the motherboard.
Is this true? If yes, then how can I connect Webcam to it?
Gobinder, Patiala
A. Regarding your
first problem, first of all clean boot your system with a fresh and
clean bootable floppy and then try removing the virus using a virus
scanner. Regarding your second problem, it is not correct that your PC
would not support the USB port. It might be the case that your system
does not have the USB connector cable. Use of these cables would make
the USB ports functional and then you can use any gadget on these ports,
including Webcam.
