Ranga's Toon Tales

Indira Gandhi

INDIRA Gandhi was back in power in 1980 and she had taken oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as Prime Minister. I made an attempt to meet her in the huge gathering to obtain her autograph on the sketch I had drawn at the occasion. The then President, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, was annoyed at my attempt to meet her. He said, "You have made enough pictures of her. There is no need for you to meet her." This made it difficult to go anywhere near her.

However, as chance would have it, she came close to the place where I was standing and despite the displeasure of the President, I pulled out the sketch from my drawing pad and showed it to her. She looked at it for a while and with a smile signed on it. This happened on January 14, 1980, during her second term as the Prime Minister of the country.
