The vanishing trick for lipstick on your collar IT is not often that one encounters stains of cosmetics on fabrics. But in a household where there are curious toddlers around, there are bound to be spills of nail varnish or other cosmetics on bed sheets and sofa seats. For all those harried moms whose little ones are cosmetic-friendly, here are a few handy tips to control the damage: Unstick the lipstick Place the stain face down on folded paper towels. Sponge area with eucalyptus oil or glycerine. Replace towels frequently; let dry; rinse. Repeat treatment, if needed, using an all-fabric bleach, because it is less damaging to colours and fabric. Va(r)nishing act! To remove naail varnish stains from cotton fabric you will need nail polish remover and terry towels. Apply nail polish remover to the back of the stain while laying the fabric on white absorbent towels. Replace towels frequently. Then rinse and launder as usual. Another method is to dab methylated spirit on a stain left by nail varnish and to blot it dry. Never use nail polish
remover on acetate, triacetate or modacrylic, as they will dissolve.
Take these fabrics to the dry cleaner. Test a small area first before
cleaning, and always read garment warning labels before cleaning. |
The chemicals and equipment you will need to blot out lipstick marks from a rug or carpet are carpet shampoo, fine fabric detergent, white terry towels, white vinegar, warm water, measuring cup, vacuum cleaner. It is best to remove the stain as soon as you notice it. The longer the stain is left on the carpet the greater the chances are of the stain setting. In every case remove all excess wet or dry material before attempting to clean. Blot wet materials using a white terry towel. Vacuum excess dry materials or gently scrape up materials with a spoon. Apply a small amount of carpet shampoo to the white terry towel and blot the stain. Continue until no further transfer of material to the towel is apparent. If the stain persists, mix 1/2 tsp. of fine fabric detergent into 1 cup of warm water. Apply a small amount, blot and repeat until the stain is removed. Be patient. Complete removal may require repeating the same step several times. Do not scrub or rub, simply dab the cleaning agent otherwise it may distort the texture of the rug. Cover the stain with the towel and press down repeatedly to absorb the stain material and detergent. Once the stain is completely removed, rinse the area with cold water; blot with a dry white terry towel until all moisture is removed. Repeat this process several times to remove cleaning solution residue. (Residue can attract soils). If the spot or stain turns brownish when dry, mix 1 part white vinegar and two parts water. Apply a small amount and blot. Repeat only once. Precautions: Never use a stronger concentration than is recommended. Never use laundry detergent or automatic dish washing detergents because they may destroy or dye some fibres. Never use non-volatile solvents as they can cause delamination in synthetic carpets either immediately or over a period of time. Non-volatile solvents do not dissipate at room temperature and will remain in your carpet. Never pour solvents directly onto your carpet or saturate your carpet. Instead apply the solvent to a white terry towel and blot the stained area. Never use highly combustible solvents such as gasoline or paint thinners. Paint taint on carpet To remove nail paint from a rug or carpet, apply a small amount of acetone to the white terry towel and blot the stain. Continue until no further transfer of material to the towel is apparent. If the stain remains mix 1/2 tsp. of fine fabric detergent into 1 cup of warm water. Apply a small amount, blot and repeat until the stain is removed. Cover the stain with the towel and press down repeatedly to absorb the stain material and detergent. Rinse the area with cold water; blot with a dry white terry towel until all moisture is removed. If the spot or stain turns brownish when dry, mix 1 part white vinegar and two parts water. Apply a small amount and blot. Repeat only once. Scented trail For removing mascara stains, follow the above method for lipstick marks removal. As for perfume marks on any fabric or rug, sponge with water at once. dab a bit of glycerine solution and blot dry. —Chetna Banerjee |
