Disaffected (disafektid): lacking loyalty, especially due to discontent with one’s friends, situation etc.

Synonyms — alienated, disloyal, estranged

Antonyms — faithful, steadfast, trustworthy

— Some disaffected members have left the ruling party and joined the opposition.

Expedient (ik’s peedient): useful or convenient for a particular purpose, though it may not be fair or moral.

Synonyms — advantageous, judicious, opportune

Enmesh (in’mesh): to involve somebody or something in a situation from where they are unable to escape.

(dispikabl, dess’pikabl): very unpleasant or hateful

Balk (also baulk) (bawlk): to shy away or draw back from doing something

Synonyms — hesitate, flinch

Antonyms — persevere

Looking back

To draw in one’s horns means to withdraw from a position one has taken up, in argument, opinion or conduct. The metaphor began in the fourteenth century and the illusion is to snails which withdraw their tentacles (horns) if they suspect or fear any danger.
