Have you seen God?

THIS refers to "Have you seen God?" by Khushwant Singh (October 19). The writer demands evidence to prove God’s existence. Evidence provided by others is secondary to first-hand knowledge. All knowledge or information about this world can be acquired through the five sense organs. ‘Intelligent’ persons define reality as that which comes within the range of the sense organs. However, these sense organs have limited capacity and cannot perceive stimuli which fall beyond their range. Enhancing the capability of these organs is essential for having a glimpse of God meditation id one of the ways of doing this.

The writer is a confused man, it seems. No one has seen heaven nor is anyone aware of any place called heaven. It is a myth. God, too, is a myth. God cannot be seen, only felt. Where faith is, there God is. Faith has no eyes, he has no faith who wishes to see.

The writer has the ability of tickling the readers’ minds. God’s existence can only be felt, experienced and seen through love and devotion. Our thought process and attitude determine how and in what form we perceive Him.

We can see Him in the precise order of nature. Therefore, it is necessary to first have faith and devotion and work persistently to visualise Him in whatever form we wish to see Him. Reaching conclusions regarding the existence of God without going through these motions would be like a layman questioning the existence of atoms and waves because no one has seen them.

God is certainly all that has been described by the writer and much more. Most religions hold that God made man in His own image. Perhaps it is equally true that man also makes God in his own image. God is the supreme spirit, the Lord, the abode, the refuge, the origin and the dissolution of the world.

Corrigendum

The headline of Roots by Deepti (October 26) has inadvertently been carried as Multiple facts in place of Multiple facets. The error is regretted.
