‘Change must be taken as challenge’
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, October 31
“Change is inevitable, and when it is the structural change, as we have been experiencing in India, it results in a turbulent socio-economic environment”, said Dr M.A. Zahir, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities PAU, while addressing members of the Ludhiana Management Association here yesterday.

Dr Zahir observed, “Change must be taken as a challenge and not a problem. For this, a fundamental change in the mindset is needed. To manage change effectively on a sustained basis, we have to reinvent ourselves as an economy. Corporate management must develop strategic thinking, so as to have a worldview of situation with long-term perspective. Not only they have to identify and strengthen their core competencies in terms of growth vector, but also they will have to have greater concern for human capital formation. Indian mangers have to forget some of the things they have been used to and develop new capabilities. The capacity to improve encompasses the capacity to anticipate, assimilate and adapt quickly, efficiently and sensibly.

Earlier, while introducing the subject, Mr V.K. Goyal, general secretary, IMA, said, “Today’s business environment is full of regular and unpredictable changes. It is a hurricane season for business worldwide. Winds of change are blowing in from all directions and they are shaking everything and everybody. Competition is tougher than ever before and is coming from places you least expect. The customer is more sophisticated, demanding, knowledgeable and aware. Technological changes are incessant. With rapid technological advances and ever increasing competition everyone is restricting, reorganising, reinventing, downsizing, and outsourcing - all at an ultrasonic pace in interest of his or her survival and competitiveness. In this backdrop, the ability to accept, absorb and implement change has emerged as the highest competitive edge that today’s organisations can possess.”

More than 300 members of the LMA including leading industrialists, entrepreneurs, top management executives, management academician, bankers, professionals and students of the PAU attended the meeting.
