Nine sites identified for sale of crackers
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, October 31
The Deputy Commissioner, Ropar has identified nine locations in the township for the sale of crackers.

The DC has, however, also agreed to a proposal of the SDM that all applications for permission for sale of crackers be routed straight through the Municipal Council who after having charged the ground rent, be allowed to sell crackers and the ground rent receipt be considered the requisite permission. Till last year the permission was issued by the SDM’s office after the applicant had paid MC the ground rent.

Sources in the SDM’s office stated that this had been done to reduce red tapism involved in getting permissions for the sale of crackers, but there are others who feel that this could mean that there would be no quality check on the crackers that are sold.

The nine locations earmarked are the Dasehra Ground in Phase 1, Opposite Kings supermarket in Phase II, Opposite Phase V Bougenvilla park, Opposite Hot Millions in Phase 3B2, Opposite the MC office in Phase 7, Opposite Silvi Park in Phase X, Opposite House number 1371 in phase 11 and one near St Xaviers School in Sector 71 and ground opposite YPS school in Phase VIII.

The police will challan all those who sell crackers at places other than those earmarked. The SP, SAS Nagar, has also written to the SDM for deputing two Duty magistrates for assisting his team on Divali duty. The Fire Officer SAS Nagar, has been asked to start taking rounds of the nine locations from tomorrow to ascertain the fire safety worthiness of various stalls.

The MC office shall remain open tomorrow for receiving fresh applications for the sale of crackers at the nine locations.

SDM meets cable operators, residents
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, October 31
The district administration has decided to intervene in the ongoing cable war between residents and cable operators for a uniform rate in township.

A meeting was called by the SDM (Civil), Mr Inder Singh, here today. Representatives of residents welfare associations and cable operators were present. Residents complained that cable charges had been enhanced several times during the past one year.

The residents also objected to advertisements being placed on screen by operators, which the latter maintained was legally allowed to them. The operators, on the other hand, submitted that enhancement in charges was a result of increase in subscription by pay channels and further due to increase in electricity tariff in Panchkula as compared to Chandigarh.

The SDM then assured both parties that he would look into the matter and submit his recommendations for uniformity in rates to the Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula.
