Sonia Gandhi presents Rajiv Marathon awards

New Delhi, October 27
Congress president Sonia Gandhi presented cash awards to the winners of the ninth Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run, organised by the National Sports Club of India (NSCI), at a simple function at 10 Janpath, New Delhi. NSCI president Subhash Chopra accompanied the children who emerged victorious in the marathon to Sonia Gandhi’s residence for the prize distribution function.

More than 10,000 children from the slum areas of Delhi had participated in the Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run held in September. Mr Subhash Chopra said Mrs Gandhi was impressed with the performance of the children, particularly the participation of a large number of girls, in the marathon run.

Mrs Gandhi was also all praise for the scholarship scheme initiated by the NSCI for the marathon winners for continuing their education. Mr Subhash Chopra said besides awarding prize money to the winners the NSCI also offers monthly scholarships to more than 100 children to pursue their education. The scheme will be effective till the children complete their education.

Mr Chopra said moves were on to restructure the format of Rajiv Marathon to make it much more competitive. Over 20 children and officials from the NSCI, led by Mr Subhash Chopra, met Mrs Gandhi. She wished the children an excellent education and a bright future and exhorted them to mix education with sports in the right spirit besides imbibing the right values.

Vaishali wins gold in Delhi Karate

New Delhi, October 27
Vaishali of YMCA won the gold medal in the 36 to 40 kg weight category in the seventh Delhi State Karate Championship held at the New Delhi YMCA premises at Jai Singh Road.

Madhuri of AFC finished second while Heina Raneet Karam of AFS claimed the bronze. Shruti of YMCA won the gold in the 41 to 45 weight category. Monica Bhadan and Deepika of AFS claimed the silver and bronze. Tanvi Sharma of HNSC won the gold in the 46-50 weight category. Saba Khan of AFS and Gaurangna Tiwari of BMS claimed the silver and bronze. Following are the other medal winners: Below 20kg: Ritika Goyal and Daisy Talwar. 21-25kg: Garleen Kaur, Payal Rana, Anita and Swati Yadav. 26-30kg: Sania Thomas, Safali and Shally Goyal. 31-35kg: Meenu Sharma, Deepika Sangwan and Meena Sharma and Versha. 36-40kg Mimansa. 61-65kg: Knishu Sharma and Prashun Sharma. 66-70kg: Praveen Singh and Rohit Bhatia. 31-35kg: Shri Nath and Gaurav. 41-45kg: Vikas Rawat, Shivlok and Preetam. 46-50kg: Sudeer, Vinod and Hari. Below 20kg: Amit Singh and P Sangram. 21-25kg: Manit Bhutani, Rahul Kumar and Mayank Manmgain. 26-30kg: Ankit Sharma, Pankaj Thakur, Mohit Verma and Chandan Pandey. 31-35kg: Anshul Tora, Nitesh Kumar, Aman Badolia and Nishant Sharma. Tara Chand stars in K N Colts’ victory

New Delhi, October 27
A fine all-round performance by Tara Chand, who scored 86 runs and picked up four wickets for 36 runs, helped K N Colts Club beat Mohammedan Sporting Club, Kolkata, by 39 runs in the final of the All-India Mother Teresa Memorial Cricket Tournament organised by the North Delhi Cricketers’ Association at Kotla 2 ground.

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) joint secretary (club), Dr S. S. Sareen, gave away the prizes.

Salahuddin of Mohammedan Sporting was awarded the bet batsman prize while Rahul Bhardwaj of K N Colts got the best bowler award.

Tara Chand was adjudged the man of the tournament. Mohammedan Sporting coach Munawar Ali was also honoured on this occasion.

Scores: K N Colts: 253 all out in 39.3 overs (Tara Chand 86, 4x6, 10x4; Kuldeep 41, Sidhartha 27, Pawan Sharma 18, Anand Mishra 14 no, Sooraj 4 for 38, Hashim 2 for 46, Sujit 2 for 40).

Mohd Sporting Club: 214 all out in 38.5 overs (Sujit Shah 66, 2x6, 7x4; Salahuddin 61, 3x6, 5x4; Tara Chand 4 for 36, Pawan Sharma 3 for 39, Rahul Bharadwaj 2 for 42).

CRPF annex swimming title in police meet

New Delhi, October 27
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) won the overall title in the 51st All-India Police Aquatic Championship which concluded at the Talkatora swimming pool complex on Sunday. CRPF won 16 gold, six silver and five bronze medals in swimming and also the team title with a tally of 191 points.

CRPF emerged runners-up in water polo, behind Border Security Force. In diving, CRPF picked up one silver and two bronze medals. Inspector Deepak Kumar Singh of CRPF, who tallied 41 points, was declared the best swimmer.

BSF emerged champions in the 12km and 4km cross country races. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) emerged champions in spring board diving with Gopi Malpeddi, who logged 432.10 points, emerging as the best diver. In high board diving, BSF took the first position, with Akhilesh Kumar, who logged 441.45 points, topping the list. Punjab won the State Championship. Babban Prasad of UP won the 100m breast stroke final clocking 01:22.01 secs. Jagannath Shah of Tripura claimed the 50m free style gold. Satyajeet Deb and Ashim Mondal of Bengal won the gold and silver in the 50m butter fly event. Sanjay Haldar of BSF claimed the bronze.
