Say no to crackers: docs

“Say no to crackers and fire works”, is the message with which doctors and members of the National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA), cycled down the city roads, urging people to stay away from crackers.

Over 60 doctors along with their families, friends and public, assembled at the Lake from where they cycled to Sector 22 and Sector 17 Plaza , carrying placards and banners, urging people to stay away from bursting crackers this Divali. “Dream of a pollution free India”, “Pollution is health dilution” , “Save your family from burns and blindness” read the messages on the placards.

Addressing people at the Sector 22 market the president of NIMA, Dr T.M. Aggarwal, cautioned people against the hazardous effects of crackers. “A mishap can not only leave you permanently blind and handicapped , but causes pollution,” he warned.

Dev Samaj School bag B’ball title

IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, in the girls’ section and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, in the boys’ section won the CBSE Cluster XI Basketball title in the three-day tournament which concluded here this evening at Bhavan Vidyalya School, Sector 27.

In the girls’ final, IS Dev Samaj eves defeated Vivek High School, Sector 38, by 41-5. Ms Meenakshi Mohindra, Principal of the hosts school, gave away the prizes.

Friendly cricket

Dikshant International School, Panchkula, organised a friendly cricket match between staff members and Parents XI at the Sector 5 grounds on Sunday. Mr Mitul Dikshit, Director of the school, was captain from the staff side . He won the toss and elected to bat first. Sqdn Ldr Tomar and Rohit scored 27 and 29 runs, respectively. Finally they were able to score 169 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 25 overs. Verma and Thakur bagged three and two wickets, respectively. In reply, Parents XI were bundled out for just 10 runs in 19 overs. Sachin Kaushik and Gupta scored 39 and 27 runs, respectively. Mitul Dikshit claimed four wickets for just 18 runs.

Sport day

MRA Modern Public School, Panchkula, celebrated its annual sports day on Sunday. The function began with a welcome song, followed by a series of colourful performances by tiny tots, who stole the hearts of the audience. Ms Monika Malik, Estate Officer, HUDA, Panchkula presided the was the guest of honour. Ms S. Mahajan, Director of the school, spoke on the occasion.

City shooters shine

City shooters hogged the limelight in the VIth All-India Kumar Surender Singh Inter-School Shooting Championship, which concluded on October 24 at Meerut. According to Mr Vijay Pal Singh, general secretary, Chandigarh Rifle Association, shooters won three golds, one silver and one bronze in the meet. Shaleen Chauhan created new record by scoring 389/400 in air rifle ISSF Junior women’s section by bettering old record of 382/400 set by Sabeeha Dhillon. Other golds were taken by Harmandeep Sidhu of Stepping Stone High School, Sector 38, by securing 340/400 in air rifle Open sight and Gursimran Sekhon of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, in air rifle open sight in the subjunior women section’s when she shot 300/400.

Judo meet

The Third CBSE National Judo Championship will begin at Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 15, Panchkula, on Monday. According to Ms Shashi Banerjee, Principal of the school, teams from various schools affiliated with the CBSE will compete in the meet.

Karate tourney

KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, bagged the overall championship by taking 47 points in the Chandigarh State Karate Championship, which concluded at Skating Rink, Sector 10, here on Sunday. The second place in this section went to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10.
