Kalmadi hails Indian performance
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 13
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi has hailed the performance of the Indian contingent at the on-going Asian Games in Busan (Korea). India have won 37 medals, including 11 gold and 12 silver medals.

"I particularly congratulate the athletic squad for earning 17 medals, including 7 gold. I congratulate the women athletes, who have done India proud", Mr Kalmadi stated in a message.

But there was depressing news for Indian contingent when the first urine sample of Sunita Rani, who won the gold in the 1500m race and bronze in the 5000m, tested positive for a banned substance. "There are reports of evidence of doping of a particular athlete. If it is true, then strictest action will be taken (against her)", the IOA chief warned. Mr Kalmadi also hailed the performance of the hockey team. "The overall performance was good in that medals have been won in 11 disciplines in the games. I thank the Sports Ministry for all their support."

Mr Kalmadi said this was just the beginning, and a lot of hard work still needed to be done. "We will have to identify the events and commence the training for the Afro-Asian Games 2003, Olympic Games 2004 and Asian Games 2006. I call upon the government for more budgetary support and corporate sectors for their expertise and funding to make India a sporting power in Asia".
