Pope granted Shakira an
audience in the Vatican
SHAKIRA was born on February 2,1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Shakira means ‘woman full of grace’ in Arabic. She is the daughter of a Colombian mother and a Lebanese father — a jeweler and writer — whose Arabic background influenced her a lot. She wrote first song of her life at eight. She left her home at the age of 13 to pursue a career in modeling in Bogot. While trying her luck in modeling, she signed contract as a singer with Sony Records. Her debut album, Magia, that means Magic, was released in 1991. She herself wrote all songs for her debut album. Her first album was not turned out to be a commercial success. Shakira dabbled in acting and appeared on the Colombian TV serial, El Oasis. She released another album in 1996. The album topped many charts and went on to top the album charts in several Latin countries. Released in 2001, her fifth album, Laundry Service, has songs in two languages—English and Spanish. Whenever Whenever is the most popular song of the album, which topped all music charts. Shakira was chosen among dozens of female Latin singers to appear on the cover of Time Magazine in a recent article titled Era of the Rockera. The Colombian government designated her as an official Goodwill Ambassador, the Pope granted her an audience in the Vatican and she was also named the Latin Female Artist of the Year at the World Music Awards in Monaco.
