Ranga's Toon Tales

Strobe Talbot

THE Deputy Secretary of State of United States of America, Strobe Talbot, was in Delhi in 1994 to hold talks with leaders of the Indian Government on issues related to Indo-US cooperation. At the end of his talks, he held a Press conference. For nearly an hour he kept the pressmen on their toes and as he was about to finish his Press meet, I made an attempt to move near him with the sketch that I had just drawn. It was not as easy as I thought. He was surrounded by senior officials of the US Embassy, including the Ambassador, besides the usual security cover. For once I thought I may not succeed.

Suddenly I spotted one of the officials of the embassy who was fairly well-known to me. He took me to Talbot and gave him a brief description of my work. He was about to be led away to his waiting car but came back to his seat to take a look at his sketch. He took out his pen and wrote a few words to give an intimate touch before he signed on it.
