Celluloid chitchat
A Preity goof-up

OVER the years, filmmakers have taken the name of an old successful film and recycled it in the hope that the magic might be recreated.

There are many cases in point, the most obvious being Aankhen. While the first one was a Dharmendra starrer, the second one had Govinda and Chunky Pandey in it.

The third version of Aankhen had the Big B, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Paresh Rawal in key roles.

Recently, Preity Zinta raised a few laughs when her co-stars in Honey Irani’s Armaan, Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, referred to the last film they acted together in Shakti. The dimpled lass thought they were talking about Boney Kapoor’s Shakti (which is due for release), and exclaimed, ‘Don’t tell me you guys are there in Shakti.’

It was left to a highly amused Bachchan to correct her, saying that he was referring to the film that was made even before she was born!

Hrithik turns down Lagaan director

This might be hard to believe. But Lagaan director Ashutosh Gowariker has been turned down by Hrithik Roshan.

Gowariker began work on his new film immediately after the Oscar ceremony earlier this year. Naturally, his first choice was Lagaan hero Aamir Khan. But since Khan wasn’t too pleased with the script, Gowariker approached Hrithik.

Given the low phase in his career, one would have expected Roshan Junior to jump at the offer. But Hrithik, who has pinned his hopes on his home production, Koi Mil Gaya, thought against taking up Gowariker’s offer. If the film goes on to make waves like Lagaan, Hrithik is sure going to rue his decision.

Karan drops buddy Kareena

Karan Johar and Kareena Kapoor are the best of friends, especially after Karan gushed over her performance in his film Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

Yet, he has gone ahead and replaced Kareena with Preity Zinta in his next film. Karan wasn’t willing to pay her the Rs 1 crore she was demanding, considering her last few films had failed.

He says. ‘Kareena was way too expensive for Dharma Productions and so we parted. Preity has come in her place and I am excited about the casting. Shah Rukh, Saif and Preity will make a great team.’

Must say, relationships in the industry are quite fickle. Kareena has refused to cut her price, despite the fact that Karan is such a close buddy.

Ash keeps Salman waiting

Seems like the hi-profile romance between Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan is over, irrespective of reports that the two are still an item.

Recently, the grey-eyed beauty kept her former beau waiting outside her make-up van for not less than three hours. This happened on the sets of her home production, Dil Ka Rishta, which stars her opposite Arjun Rampal.

Incidentally, Salman was supposed to do a guest role in the film, which has now gone to Priyanshu Chatterjee.

Salman, known to be brash, patiently waited for Ash in his car, never even once forcing himself on his former lady love. According to sources, Ash headed straight for her car once the shoot was over. And when her car passed Salman’s she just rolled down the window and spoke to him for a couple of minutes.

Looks like the lady is in no mood to forgive Salman for all his hot-blooded behaviour!

Indian men don’t turn Celina on

With an exotic lineage to her credit, Celina Jaitley is one hot babe. Having won the Miss India crown in 2001, this beautiful damsel was in the news with three films in her lap within a year. But this half Afghani-half Punjabi beauty is also in the news for all the wrong reasons as well. First she was linked with restauranteur Sanjay Narang and was held responsible for the Sanjay-Sushmita split. Then it was her friendship with Sachin Tendulkar. And if this was not enough, she has been linked with Fardeen Khan, with whom she is doing two films. And in spite of all this, Celina says she doesn’t find Indian men appealing.

Not wanting to get her hands dirtier in this dog-eats-dog industry, the beautiful Celina is waiting for her debut, Janasheen, to prove her mettle. And if she fails, she is all ready to pack her bags and move to Geneva for further studies. Smart move. what say?

Aamir’s Dil Chahta Hai Avan

The Aamir-Reena split was quite a rude shock to the film fraternity. A marriage which had all the ingredients of a perfect fairytale and was considered as solid as the rock of Gibraltar is suddenly on the rocks!

If stories doing the rounds are to be believed, problems in the marriage started with Aamir’s growing fondness for co-star Mamta Kulkarni. Reena had threatened a walk out right then, but decided to stay on after much convincing for the sake of Junaid, their first born. Aamir was later linked with Lagaan co-star Rachael Shelley, the gori mem who is completely smitten by Aamir in the movie. Reena, too busy with their second child, had no time for stories about her philanderous husband and the speculations died soon. And now if a close friend of the Khan’s is to be believed, the latest muse in Aamir’s life is hair-stylist Avan Contractor, responsible for giving the actor his chic look in Dil Chahta Hai. Avan seems to have snipped off a little too much of Aamir, following him even on his trips abroad. Her role in Aamir’s life seems to be a quite a prominent one much after the film is over.

Who says all stories end with ‘They lived happily ever after...’

Sen-sible choice

Though Sushmita is on a high following the rave reviews she got for Filhaal, where she overshadowed the immensely talented Tabu, the Sen-sible babe is going slow on choosing films. Besides, Manisha Koirala’s debut home production Paisa Vasool, the only film that Sush has signed on is Mahesh Manjrekar’s Pran Jaaye Par Shaan Na Jaaye. The film which stars Mahesh Manjrekar in the lead role is packed with actresses like Raveena Tandon, Namrata Shirodkar and Diya Mirza. Sushmita decided to take up the film because she has a key role, that of a sutradhar, who strings various episodes together. A Sen-sible decision, one would say!

J.P. Dutta oversteps the LOC

Ali’s not well on the Line Of Control. And this time round, it’s not the enemy across the border, but director J.P. Dutta to be blamed. After Refugee, his next venture LOC, which boasts of a multi-star cast, has got Dutta into the bad books of his unit.

Though he has the reputation of being a slave driver, Dutta crossed all limits this time. As it is, it was quite bad working in sub-zero conditions. And if that was not enough, the entire unit, including the stars, was asked to climb up and down the mountains carrying heavy equipment.

Even basics like food were not taken care of. The otherwise spoilt stars were forced to eat ice-cold food, while J.P. Dutta and wife Bindiya got hot piping food. A star son, who is part of the project, is known to have lashed out against the Duttas. It is said that half the cast was sick with fever and flu. But the tough taskmaster that he is, Dutta compelled them to shoot in ailing conditions. A well-known star from the South almost stomped off the sets when he was made to wait the whole day for his shot.

The movie, which started off on quite a sour note with half the industry’s who’s who rejecting the film or walking out of it, surely doesn’t seem to have ended on a good note.

Maybe, it’s Dutta’s time to turn Refugee in the industry. Who knows?
