Looking back

The whirligig of time means the revolving or circling movement of time. The phrase comes from Shakespeare (Twelfth Night): "And thus whirl gig of time brings in his revenges." In the 5th century whirligig was a toy that was whirled twisted or spun round. Then it came to be used for various mechanical devices. Today the word is obsolete and used mainly in the idiom.
