MEHDI HASAN is the most respected name in the world of ghazal singers. He was born in Luna, a small town in Rajasthan, India, that is 107 miles from Jaipur. Mehdi inherited music. He belongs to a family, which produced 15 generations of musicians. He belongs to the 16th one. His father, Ustad Azim Khan, was a renowned classical singer who used to sing in the service of the Maharaja of Jaipur. His father taught him classical music. Mehdi Hasan was just six years old when he started learning music. Mehdi Hasan held his first public performance in front of the Maharaja of Baroda when he was just eight years old. Hasan mastered a range of vocal music, including Dhrupad, Khayal, Thumri and Dadra. He learnt music from his uncle, Ismail Khan.

He started his professional career as a radio artist for Karachi in 1952. He soon got popular in 1959 when Ghulam Qadir, elder brother of Mehdi Hasan, composed Gulon mein rang bharay baad-i-naubahar chalay, that was recorded in Lahore in 1959 which became an instant hit. Ghulam Qadir composed most of Hasan’s ghazals.

Mehdi Hasan is famous not only in Pakistan but famous worldwide. He is undoubtedly one of the most renowned ghazal singers in the world today. Even Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is a fan of Mehdi Hasan. Hasan performed at his residence in 1978. Mehdi Hasan in an interview said: "Music and poetry know no boundaries. Jo haq Pakistanion ko meri ghazalon pe hai, wohi Hinudustanion ko bhi hai. Unho ne mujhe kam pyar nahin diya."

Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, both are admirers of the great musician. In an interview Asha Bhosle has praised the musician no end and said: "He is God's miracle. I feel all those singers who have come from Marwar are really good. He is one of them. His sur and lai are brilliant. If an impatient man listens to his songs, he will calm down. That's his greatness."

In July 2001, Mehdi received a Lifetime Achievement Award at a programme held by PTV, Karachi. Mehdi’s biggest achievement is that all of his records produced till date (more than 25,000) got popularity and were liked by all.
