Q. I have an assembled computer with Windows ’98 OS. Whenever I boot my computer it shows an error that a file NWNP32.DLL is missing and the following features such as Netware will not be available. On manual searching the file was present under the folder named Win NT 32. When I click okay, it boots normally. Please guide me how can I fix the error.

Saurabh Aggarwal, Yamunanagar

A. This problem normally comes up with the older edition of Windows. In order to solve this problem, you need to first remove the services for NetWare Directory Services. Then on restarting the computer reinstall the Netware services again. I hope this will solve your problem. You can do this by following the procedure mentioned below. In Control Panel, double-click Network. Click Add, click Service, click Microsoft, click Microsoft Services For NetWare Directory Services. Then click Add.

Q. I have an assembled PC with the following configuration: P III, 933 MHz kob, 810e FSFx Mercury motherboard, Seagate 40 GB HDD, 52X CD-ROM Samsung, FDD Samsung, Priya amplified speakers, ADcom scroll mouse, TVS Keyboard, LG 15" Monitor. I have three operating systems, Windows '98 SE, Windows XP in D: and Linux loads (LILO) from the floppy. C: and D: drives are 3 GB each and E: and F: are 10 GB each and G: is 8 GB. My problem is when I start XP, the internal speaker gives a short beep and stops responding when the welcome message appears. When I press Alt+Tab, a message appears that the system has no paging file or is too small. To fix this problem, go to system in Control Panel, click Advanced Settings. On the advanced tab and under performance click settings on the advanced tab, click change, click custom-size and then type an initial or maximum paging file size. I have followed the steps suggested but all in vain. Every time it displays the same message, I think this may be because even when the changes are made under the virtual memory in Advanced tab total paging file size of all drives remain 0 (zero) MB when I click change in the virtual memory. In the virtual memory page that appears under the total paging file size of all drives currently allocated remains zero MB although the minimum and maximum size are 2 MB and 189 MB, respectively.

Vinayak Sharma, Shimla

A. The solution to your problem is quite simple. You need to increase the paging file size and opt for the option "Let me manage the Virtual Memory." Assign the maximum disk space available in the virtual memory settings and also chose at 500 MB for paging file. I think this will solve your problem. However, you must also check the free disk space in your computer, because if the free disk space will not be much, then this type of problems could occur.

Q. I have Intel Celeron 700 MHz, D-link 56 KPS external modem. When I try to open display in the Control Panel, I receive the following error message: "Your system administrator disabled the display control panel." Please get me rid off this problem. My display driver is Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller.

A. You have not mentioned the details of your operating system. This information is very essential for solving your problem. However, generally speaking logon as the administrator when the windows asks you to logon. Then change the settings for accessibility.

Q. My system configuration is — P III, 700 MHz, Intel 810 motherboard, 15GB HDD, Windows '98 SE. For the last few days, my system has started giving an error message during the boot process which reads, "ERROR STARTING PROGRAM The MSVCP60.DLLfile is linked to the missing export MSVCRT.DLL:_Ic_collate_cp." The message disappears on pressing the OK tab and the system boots but is displayed everytime during the boot process. I've not yet been able to make out which program is the error message associated with. This problem began after I installed my BTC multimedia keyboard. I've checked from the Software CD that my system fulfils the hardware requirements. I tried scandisk but to no effect. I've also tried reinstalling the keyboard but the problem still persists. Please help me out of it. My second problem is concerned with Excel files. I've saved my *.xls files in the My Documents folder but I am unable to open those files directly from My Documents folder. On double clicking a file, Excel window opens but the file contents are not displayed. However, I can open them by first going to Excel and then clicking on open in File menu. I've MS Office 2000 installed on my system. My third problem is that I'm unable to record voice through mike even after setting the mixer properties as described by you in one of the earlier edition. Also, you mentioned in your previous edition that if the hardware acceleration is full, then the system does not play multiple sounds but in my case it plays multiple sounds even after the hardware acceleration is full. How can this be stopped?

A. From the description of your problem it appears that the incorrect version of the Msvcrt.dll file is installed on your computer. In order to solve this problem either you can repair Office 2000 or reinstall the Msvcrt.dll File. In the first step try to repair the Office 2000. Following are the steps to Repair Office 2000. Close all programs that are open. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click your Microsoft Office 2000 installation, and then click Add/Remove. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office. In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, click to select Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Finish. When the Office Repair is finished, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are, click Yes and let Windows restart. If this works, your problem would be solved. But if you still get the same error then you may reinstall Msvcrt.dll File.

Q. I have a Celeron 766 MHz, 256 MB RAM, Intel 810e motherboard, 40 GB HDD, 52XLG CD ROM, Motorola SM56 PCI speakerphone modem. I have 4 partitions in my HDD and have Win '98 and XP as operating system on drive C: and D:, respectively. My problem is whenever I try to connect to the Internet using a dial up connection (ISP Glide), my bytes sent column shows reading up to 390 bytes only, after which it cannot sent any further bytes. But it can continue receiving bytes up to some 3,000 and more in 5-6 minutes. I have tried several solutions, including reinstalling the modem again. My friend suggested that this could possibly be due to current in the phone lines. I really cannot understand what the real cause is.

A. From the description of your problem, it appears your telephone line is faulty. Kindly check your telephone line for joints, cuts and opened joints and also try not to have many extensions and loose fittings. Also check if your telephone line is close to any strong electromagnetic field as this can also affect your Internet connectivity. If you think that your telephone line has become old, then you may also try replacing it.

Q. I have e-mail accounts — one personal with satyam.net.in and other free with sify.com. I receive lot of junk mails on both these accounts. I had subscribed to some a while ago but do not require now. In spite of my repeated requests for unsubscribing, I keep receiving these. Kindly suggest if there is any way to block these mails. If yes, kindly elaborate.

Navreet, Jalandha

A. Unsolicited mails are a big problem with the e-mails. The best option for you is to use filters to get rid of these mail and direct the junk mails to the trash folder directly.

Q. I have Compaq Presario having configuration: P III-733MHz, 64 MB RAM, 20 GB hard disk, 810e Intel chipset motherboard. My hard disk has two partitions — C: 17.6GB and D: 994 MB. These are the same from the time of purchase. The operating system is Windows Me. My problem is that I want to install Windows 2000 server (for learning purposes). Can I install the new operating system along with the previous? Is it safe to install both operating systems on single drive i.e. C:. Does this affect the speed? A few days ago, I repartitioned the hard disk into three drives — C, D, E with capacity 4 MB, 7.5 MB, 7.5 MB each using Fdisk and then load Win ’98 on C: and Windows 2000 server on E. But it didn’t work properly because it didn’t detect the drivers. Then I run the Quick Restore CDs(that comes along with Compaq PCs containing drivers). These CDs reformatted the hard disk again into 17.6GB and 994 MB partitions and reloads the Win ME. After that computer starts working properly. Can you please guide me?

Amarjit, Hoshiarpur

A. It is not possible to run two operating systems on one single partition and the only exception is Linux. However, you may Install Windows 2000 on a separate partition, but the low hard disk space available in the other partition may create problems for you as Windows 2000 may require space more than available on your system. The only solution is to reformat and repartition and then by creating the second partition of good size you can install Windows 2000.

Q. I have Compaq branded PC with the following configuration — Intel Celeron, 1.8 GHz processor, 810e Intel chipset motherboard, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, Windows 98 Se as OS. I have Satyam online Internet connection. My problem is when I want to open any site the site open very slowly. Sometimes it gives DNS error. I am facing this problem since last one week. Please suggest a solution and how can I make the speed of the Internet faster.

Anmol Kumar, Delhi

A. First of all remove all the clutter and delete the temporary Internet files, from your computer and also clear the memory and disk cache. Then try to connect to the Internet and you will find a change in your Internet speed. However, if it does not work upto your satisfaction, then you should check your telephone line for cuts and joints.

Q. We have a computer with motherboard 810E and onboard display and sound cards. When we install Win98/Me operating system on it, it's internal or onboard display and sound controllers functions properly but when we install Window-NT workstation software as operating system then it's internal sound and display controller does not function properly. Please advice us as we have a network of a number of computers.

Col. S.S. Dhillon (retd), Amritsar

A. You must use the correct version of drivers for sound and video display in NT. You can explore the motherboard CD for the appropriate version of drivers for NT/2000. Once you use the correct drivers, your problems would be solved.
