Raul Ricardo Alfonsin

"A good job", said Dr Raul Ricardo Alfonsin as he saw his sketch and promptly affixed his signature over it. This happened during his state visit to Delhi as President of Argentina. He was in Delhi in 1985 to take part in the Six-Nation Summit on Nuclear Disarmament when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister.

Alfonsin graduated in Law and entered politics in 1958 by winning a seat as a provincial deputy. In 1963 he became President of the Buenos Aires Committee. The 1976 military coup was a setback to his ambitions and during the military regime he published the book La Cuestion Argentina (The Argentina Affairs).

In the 1983 internal elections of the party he obtained the majority vote for Presidential candidature. He was subsequently elected constitutional President of Argentina.
