In a just a short span of 19 years, Dayanand Anglo Vedic Public School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, has emerged as one of the most prestigious institutions in northern India. Although managed directly by the prestigious D.A.V. College Managing Committee, New Delhi, which is running more than 650 educational institutions all over the country and abroad, the DAV Public School, Ludhiana, has more or less become synonymous with its principal, Mr R. S. Patial, who has been heading the institution for the past about 18 years. He sounds and looks like a man totally in control of his institution. And like a proud father who never tires of recounting the sterling performance of his offspring, Mr Patial is proud of announcing that he has built the school brick by brick.

A strict disciplinarian, Mr Patiala keeps a three-foot-long wooden rod on the top of his table in plain view of his visitors. And there is a soft side of Mr Patiala too. On one side of his table is placed a small radio which keeps on playing songs. "I love music," he says simply.

There is no canteen in the school, says Mr Patial proudly. And there are no rehriwalas outside the school gates selling aloo-chhola, chana jor garam or any other foodstuffs. Children are advised to bring their food from home, with the result that there are no cases of food poisoning and absenteeism among students due to ill-health. Teachers are advised to sit and eat with the children.

Children are also discouraged from bringing money from home. They are subjected to physical searches for money. " Money is not needed in the school. Parents have already paid their tuition fees and food has been brought from home. So what do the children need the money for ...?" asks Mr Patial.

The school its own yajnashala where havans are performed by students every day.

"When I took over as principal way back in I984, the school was functioning from a small rented building with just a handful of students", recalls Mr Patial. "And as soon as I would return home from the school, I would pick up my bicycle and go round the town to collect donations for the school".

The response from some of the bigger industrial houses was discouraging. They obviously took Mr Patial as just another donation-seeker. "Then finally I turned to the parents of the students who were studying in the school. And the response was heart-warming. After that, donations kept pouring in and soon we were in a position to buy a piece of land and start construction..."

Even after becoming the principal of the school, Mr Patial continues to teach the classes. "I have not given up my habit of teaching. I take my classes every day. Teaching is my strength on the basis of which I became the principle", he points out.

The school functioned in the rented accommodation up to March, 1987. Construction work on the present building began in December, 1986 and the first stage was completed in 1994. The school now covers a wide area of four acres in one of the posh colonies of the city. The building has well equipped laboratories, well stocked library to cater to the practical, theoretical and literary needs of the students and teachers.

The school in its playgrounds provides facilities for student's training on mass scale in various games. Since prolonged power breakdowns is the bane of everyday life of Ludhiana, a 64 KVA generator set has been installed in the school premises. All classes in the pre-primary block have black and white TV sets that are connected to the dish antenna of the school. For catering to the audio visual needs of the syllabus, the school has four coloured TV set, tape recorders and overhead projectors and LCD's.

The school has the strength of 4049 students and a team of 116 teachers. As regards transport, the school has a fleet of six buses for going to the various areas of city. Foundation stone of the auditorium block was laid on December 17, 1997 by ex-president late Mr T.R. Tuli. The cost of the block was estimated to be about Rs 2 crore. It has been completed within a short span of two years only. This block accommodated library, computer rooms and audio-visual room in the basement.

The school is independent and does not get any grant from the government or any other agency. School raises its own resources through fees and contributions of public and donations by philanthropists and industrialists. The school is now planning to open another branch.

‘Discipline is all important’

Principal RS Patial* Our educational scene is chaotic. We are not clear what we want for our children. Board examinations have become irrelevant so far as admissions to all India institutions are concerned because they all conduct their own entrance examinations.

On Examination System's lack of credibility

* The examination system has lost its credibility. Faith of students as well as their parents has been seriously undermined by what has been happening...leading question papers, indifferent evaluation of answersheets, lack of accountability all around. Therefore, urgent steps are required to be taken to establish credibility, reliability and faith in the system.

Importance of religion

* A child must have a balanced view of religion if do not want to produce bigots. We in India are a multi-ethnic society right from the beginning. In the West, this realisation has come only now. In England, it has now become compulsory in schools to study about at least two religions. Religious education is most essential because I feel that without religion, you cannot have a value system.

Spare the rod, spoil the child

* I am a strict disciplinarian. Nothing can be achieved without discipline: neither longevity nor performance. Officially, corporal punishment is banned. But I keep a wooden rod on my table. It is used on a student only when things tend to go out of control and that too, with the permission of the parents.

Secret of success

* Excellence is our motto and we make it a point that every step taken by us helps to achieve the same. We dream which is backed by commitment and supplemented by hard work. ASP

Poems by students

A Green Place

I like a green place,

Where in flowers can race

A house with a green lawn,

Where there are flowers at dawn,

Where there is the buzzing f bees.

And the gentle rustling of leaves

Where streams make a musical sound

And there is no pollution around.

Jasleen Kaur, Class II-F

Two Lion Cubs

Everyone knows our daddy, don't you?

Our Daddy's the lion at the Zoo.

He's got heavy paws and great mane of hair,

And his roar gives people a terrible scare!

A lion like that must have plenty to eat,

So Daddy is given the best kind of meat.

But we are just cubs, and our only food

is sweetened milk, which is awfully good.

Navdeep Kaur, VI-A, D.A.V. Public School

Oh! Teacher

Oh! teacher bring me close

Let me blossom like a rose

Give my day a jolly start

You that are my friendly guide

make my heart fill with pride

Talk to me, and let me speak

from you, guidance do I seek

Make learning a work of play

That I may feel free and gay

Stop scolding giving me lectures

There's more I expect from teachers

Listen to me, give me a break

Let me dream and castles make

Help me realise my dream

And be proud I was in your team

Pridhi, VI-A
