There is more to denim than jeans

Denim lends a funky, cowboyish feel
Denim lends a funky, cowboyish feel

DENIM has long been a symbol of casual dressing. It is best associated with jeans and jackets. Not many people can visualise this tightly woven fabric being used for home furnishing. Yet, that very rough’n’tough image, which makes denim such a favourite, stands it in good stead when used to do up your interiors, especially those rooms which are subjected to a lot of wear and tear.

With a leading Indian home furnishing manufacturer launching its denim collection of home accessories, denim has suddenly become the hot, hot stuff in interiors. The colour continuum reflects shades of blue—the ice and stone-washed look.

But if you can’t afford to splurge on this upmarket collection, try assembling your own denim line for the home.

You needn’t go far. Dig out those old pair of jeans you’ve discarded just because they’re a wee bit torn. And rummage around for unused denim jackets you’ve outgrown. Or just get lengths of denim cloth from the nearest casual wear store and set out to clothe your home in this versatile and wear’n’tear-resistant fabric.

Shades of blue

Here's how the versatility of this fabric can be explored :

Denim looks lovely on lampshades. A small piece cut out from an old pair of jeans can be fitted on and stuck on an old lampshade to give it a new, stylish look. Complement it by hanging small beads on the rim of the shade. Wow, the snazzy shade will look as stylish as the product of any upmarket interiors boutique, at no extra cost!

Then there are, of course, the cushion covers that can easily be made of denim. Mix 'n' match them with contrasting shades of other fabrics to brighten up the room, if you don't want to have an attack of blues! The best thing about this fabric is that it won't wear or tear even in the fiercest of cushion fights your kids might indulge in.

Live-in with denim

It's use doesn't end here. Denim can be used for making slipcovers for your sofas too. It can protect the underlying expensive upholstery as well as give a complete look by itself.

To maintain the lived-in look of your living room, where the accent is on style as well as functionality, denim sofa backs or chair backs offer a refreshing change with their rugged, cowboy feel. If you have some odd patches from jeans'n'jackets lying around , what better than to sew them and strew them on sofa backs for that informal ambience that characterises the living area of your home. And you won't suffer any heartburn even if your pet dog or prankster kids run amock all over them.

Dine fine

This funky, cowboyish feel can be extended to your dining area as well. Long strips of denim can converted into runners for your dining table. Or you can cut and sew them into imaginative shapes, be it fruits or vegetables, and viola! you have another designer line on hand.

You can experiment all you want with this tough fabric and come up with many more ingenuous uses. Once you get started, you'll realise that there's more to denim than jeans!
