St. George to clash against Saini 
School in soccer final

New Delhi, July 30
Fancied St. George College, Mussorrie and Saini School, Rewari will contest the final of the Bro Mahony Inter-School Senior Football Tournament to be held at the St. Mary’s School ground in Delhi Cantt on Wednesday.

St. George School, Mussorrie outclassed Mount St. Mary’s School 6-0 in the first semi-final match on Tuesday. The winners led by four goals at the interval. Ayush Shah scored three goals (no hattrick). The other marksmen were Jaydin Surestha, Neerab Tuladhar and Gaurab Thapa.

In the second semi-final, Saini School, Rewari prevailed over Tagore International School 2-0. The goals came one in each half. Saini School took the lead in the second minute after kick off through striker Phool Preet. Manish completed the tally in the 14th minute of second half.

In the junior division, St. Columba’s School and Modern School, Barakhamba Road, will meet in the title clash at the Mount St. Mary’s School ground on Wednesday morning.

St. Columba’s School defeated Gyan Bharti School by a solitary goal scored by Prince in the fourth minute of first half. In the second semi-final, Modern School, Barakhamba Road, edged past Don Bosco School 2-1. After a goalless first half, Anubhav Jha put Modern School in the lead in the tenth minute on resumption. Five minutes later, Don Bosco equalised when they converted a penalty kick.

Bijay Baby scored off the penalty. Anjum got the match-winner for Modern School at the fag end of the match.

Wednesday’s fixtures (finals): St.Columba’s School vs Modern School, Barakhamba Road (9.30 am); Saini School vs St. George College (11 am) — Mount St. Mary’s School ground.

Ankita Chaudhry shoots two golds

New Delhi, July 30
Ankita Chaudhry, a promising shooter and a student of Delhi Public School (DPS), R K Puram, annexed the junior as well as the senior women’s titles in the sports pistol event of the 20th Delhi State Shooting Championship held at the Tughlakhabad Ranges in the Capital.

Ankita, who is also the sports secretary of DPS, shot 263 out of 300. In the air pistol event, she shot 351 out of 400 to claim the silver. Kadambari of St. Stephen’s College, with a score of 357/400, snatched the gold.

Ankita Chaudhry has won six gold and two silver medals since 1999 in the Delhi State Shooting Championship. In the Delhi State Inter-School Competitions, Ankita lifted five gold and one silver medal. She was ranked sixth and fifth in the All-India Inter-School Championship in 1999 and 2000 respectively.

She had also struck two gold medals in the Delhi Olympic Week held in 2001.

During the Kumar Surender Singh Shooting Championship held in 2001, Ankita qualified for an international competition in the junior air pistol event. In the pre-National G V Mavalankar Shooting Championship held in 2001, she broke the national record in sports pistol by logging a score of 269 points.

Ankita, daughter of Additional DIG (Operations) of ITBP, JVS Chaudhary, has now set her sights higher to bring laurels to the country from international competitions.

BCCI umpires’ seminar in Delhi from Sept 7

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will conduct an All-India Seminar of umpires in Delhi on September 7 and 8.

BCCI senior vice-president C K Khanna, who is also the vice-president of the Delhi and District Cricket Assocition, said this was for the first time that Delhi would be hosting the BCCI Umpires’ Seminar.

Mr Khanna said besides the regular features, some novel additions to the seminar would be a question and answer session, discussion on the latest laws enacted by the International Cricket Council (ICC). And also the role of the third umpire in view of the recent decision taken by the ICC, would be pertinent one.

Mr Khanna said the BCCI has requested the ICC to provide audio and video cassettes of the Umpires’ Seminar conducted by the ICC at Cape Town, South Africa, in March, 2002.

Virat slams century for Delhi University CC

A brilliant unbeaten century by Virat Kohli, who cracked 104, and deadly bowling of 3 for 20 by Shailej Sondhi, helped Delhi University Coaching Centre beat North Delhi Cricket Academy by seven wickets to enter the quarter-final of the first Prabhu Dayal Memorial Under-15 Cricket Tournament played at the Ashok Vihar ground.

Virat Kohli was declared the Man of the Match. Aditya Gulati was adjudged the best batsman while the best bowler award went to Shailej Sodhi.

Scores: North Delhi Cricket Academy: 163 for 7 in 30 overs (Aditya Gulati 36, Karan Jain 30, Shailej Sondhi 3 for 20).

Delhi University Coaching Centre: 165 for 3 in 24.5 overs (Virat Kohli 104 n o, Chayan Kokcha 25, Apoorv Kumar 2 for 35).

Jayanti Devi Cricket tourney

The first Jayanti Devi Goel Under-19 Cricket Tournament will be held from August 4 at the Ashok Vihar ground. Twelve teams will participate in the tournament.

Man of the Match, best batsman and best bowler awards will be given away in every match.

The final will be best of three games. Entries close on August 2 with Mr Ashok Goel, Organising Secretary, F-24/41, Sector 3, Rohini. Ph: 7163961.

Cops launch liaison drive

New Delhi, July 30
In an effort to bring the public to work in close coordination with the police, the South district police launched a Community Liaison Programme (CLP) from today in each of the 18 districts.

The scheme was launched at the PHD house by the Delhi Police Commissioner R. S. Gupta in the presence of Kapil Dev, Karan Thapar, Dr Naresh Trehan, cardiologist, Dr P. K. Dave, Director of AIIMS, Dr R. S. Sirohi, Director of IIT Delhi, Sayed Hasan Mehandi, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Milia Islamia University, Dr J. S. Guleria, Director, Sita Ram Bhartia Institute, Arun Kapoor, president, CII, and other prominent people from various walks of life. The scheme was envisaged under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in which the South district was specially chosen because of the profile of the people and their problems. The main objective of the programme is to ensure close coordination and cooperation between the police and public.

The CLP groups constituted in each police station comprises people from various professions and fields and are selected for a specific period to regularly meet and discuss their common problems. The CLPs will undertake programmes like tenant verification, servant verification, verification of service agents, putting up security device and gates in the neighbourhood, engage security services and promote communal harmony. The Community Liaison Officer will coordinate with the police and provide them necessary assistance as and when required. The area ACP and the SHO will supervise the work of the CLPs.

This comprehensive community policing project will include other projects like the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and Senior Citizens Scheme. The Resident Welfare Associations and Market Welfare Associations have been given special importance under the scheme.

Some residents who had done some valuable contribution to help the police will receive commendation certificates from the Delhi Police Commissioner. This scheme has worked extremely well in countries like Singapore, Japan and England and has helped in developing excellent relations between the police and public.
