St George College qualify for quarters

New Delhi, July 28
Fancied St. George College, Mussorrie, registered a stunning 6-0 victory against Don Bosco School, Delhi and qualified for the senior division quarter-final of the Bro Mahony Inter-School Football Tournament at the Mount St. Mary’s School ground in the Capital on Sunday. St. George led by two goals at the interval.

In an one-sided encounter, Gaurab struck a brace of goals. Tsering Norbu, Issac, Wamgchuk Kirme and Issac accounted for one goal each. St. George College had earlier beaten Laxman Public School and Don Bosco Public School.

In another senior division match, Vasant Valley School, Delhi sailed past St. Mary’s Academy, Meerut 2-0 to earn full points in their last league match. The goals came once in each half.

Vasant Valley forged ahead in the 17th minute of first half through striker Sanjit Kewalramani. Ashok Sahir Bintung completed the tally in the second session. Though St. Mary’s Academy put up a keen fight, the two scoring chances they got went abegging. After today’s matches, the quarter-final line-up was completed in the senior division. Mount St. Mary’s, Tagore International School, Saini School, Shri Ram School, St Columba’s School, Vasant Valley School, St. George College and Don Bosco School have made the cut.

In the junior division, Gyan Bharti School defeated Shri Ram School, Gurgaon by a solitary goal, scored by Sarthak in the 12th minute of first half. In the junior division, St. Columba’s School, Gyan Bharti School, Modern School (Barakhamba Road) and Don Bosco School have completed the semi-final line-up. The last league match in the junior division will be played between St. Mary’s Academy, Meerut and Don Bosco School on Monday.

Monday’s fixtures: Senior Division Quarter-finals: St. George College vs Shri Ram School (9 am); Mount St. Mary’s vs Vasant Valley (10.15 a m); St. Columba’s School vs Tagore International (12.30 pm); Saini School, Rewari vs Don Bosco School (1.15 p m). Junior division: SMA, Meerut vs Don Bosco (3 pm).

Karan, Aklesh star for Rlys

Karan Singh and Aklesh Sharma guided Railway Clearing Accounts Office to a 3-2 victory over Hans Raj School B team, comprising Ketan Jain, Dhruv Saxena and Aman Ahuja, in the Delhi Inter-Club Table Tennis League for men and women, played at the Khalsa College and Shri Ram College of Commerce premises. For the losers, Ketan Jain and Dhruv Saxena played a key role, when they scored a win each against Bharat Sharma of Railway Clearing.

In the Women’s Inter-Club League at the Khalsa College ground, Shri Ram College of Commerce team, assisted by a well-knit team of Pratima Syal, Anshu Sharma and Anjali Jain, outplayed Khalsa College 3-0.

Hans Raj School A team, comprising Shikha Sharma, Neha Aggarwal and Esha Monga, prevailed over Jaspal Kaur Public School by three matches to one.

Raman slams brisk century

Raman Gujral hit a brisk century (126, 18x4, 3x6), Virat Kohli cracked 67 and Varun Sood slammed an unbeaten 50 as Delhi University Coaching Centre beat St. Giri Public School by 221 runs in a league match of the first Master Prabhu Dayal Memorial Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Ashok Vihar ground.

Electing to bat, Delhi University Coaching Centre amassed 354 for 4 in the allotted 35 overs. Raman Gujral’s brilliant century set the tone and tenor of Delhi University Coaching Centre’s run feast. His swashbuckling knock was appreciated by the crowd.

In reply, St. Giri Public School struggled to make 133 for 9 in 35 overs. Nishant Kumar struck an unbeaten 46 and Aman Preet Singh made 35 to give a semblance of respect to St. Giri Public School’s score in the face of hostile bowling by Shailej Sondhi (3 for 13) and Vikas Kumar (3 for 16).

Virat Kohli was adjudged the best batsman while the best bowler award went to Shailej Sondhi.

Scores: Delhi University Coaching Centre: 354 for 4 in 35 overs (Raman Gujral 126, Virat Kohli 67, Varun Sood 55 n o, Vikas Singh 21, Amit Kumar 2 for 44).

IOA mourns death of Vice-President

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi, in a message from Manchester, where he is currently attending the Commonwealth Games, today condoled the death of Vice-President Krishan Kant.

The message said the “the Indian Olympic Association and the members of the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games were shocked to hear the untimely demise of Mr Krishan Kant, Vice-President of India.”

Mr Kalmadi said the late Vice-President of India was a keen sports lover, and had received the Queen’s Baton of the Commonwealth Games at his New Delhi residence a few weeks back. Mr Kalmadi said the “IOA and the Indian contingent express their deep condolences and pray to almighty to give courage and strength to the members of the bereaved family”.

Cops get set to face bomb threat

New Delhi, July 28
The Delhi Police will soon have three additional bomb disposal squads (BDSs) and nine bomb disposal teams (BDTs) so that it is better equipped to face the continuing terrorist threats in the Capital.

Police sources said a proposal, which was referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has been cleared and the go-ahead given to the Delhi Police to acquire the necessary equipment The BDSs and the BDTs will supplement the nine mobile crime teams inducted into the force recently.

In addition to this, the Delhi Police will have 33 sniffer dogs against the 11 at present. A team of senior police officers had recently gone to Hyderabad to select the canine detectives.

The then Police Commissioner, Mr Ajai Raj Sharma, had reiterated the demand for augmenting the Capital’s police force, as it was responsible both for the security of the general public as well as a large number of VVIPs residing in the Capital. In addition to this, there was also the responsibility of providing security to a large number of vital installations that dot the Capital.

The new Police Commissioner, Mr R. S. Gupta, had concurred with the demand for additional men and material. The Delhi Police top brass has been continuously seeking additional men and material to keep pace with the fast growing megalopolis. At present, the Delhi Police have a strength of 55, 000.
