Tweak and fine-tune
Windows MANY of us do not realise that our systems can run faster than they normally do provided we have the means to manage the crucial settings governing memory and OS. Thanks to freeware writers, Windows can be tweaked and fine-tuned to function according to the personal requirements and both physical and page memories can be freed as per requirements so that the system operates at optimum speed without overclocking the CPU. Here are two such programs that help you achieve exactly this. Analogx Maxmem Have you ever wondered why it is that when you first reboot your machine, it seems to run smoother and faster than it does after it’s been running for a while? This is due in part to programs using system resources (like memory) and then failing to free it when they exit. The end result of problems like this is that your system runs slower. Now you can take control of the computer’s memory usage with AnalogX MaxMem! In Windows there are basically two types of memory — physical and page. Physical memory is easy to understand. It’s how much RAM you have installed in your computer. So if your system has 64 megs of RAM, that really is just 64 megs of physical memory. The other type, page memory, is actually a file on your hard drive that the computer can save physical memory to. This is done periodically. As you can probably guess, page memory is not nearly as fast as physical memory. And that’s the reason the computer starts to operate more slowly. As you run more programs that don’t free up resources properly, they use up more and more physical memory, leaving less and less for other programs to use. What MaxMem does is that it forces the system to always have certain amounts of physical memory available and ensure that it never drops below that amount. Also, when your machine is idle for an extended period of time, you can have MaxMem automatically free up a larger percentage of the system memory. The icon on the system tray indicates the physical memory utilisation for the last 60 seconds. The top equates to 100 per cent, and the bottom to zero per cent, of your memory being used. As the bar graph gets higher, it will change from green to yellow, and then finally to red. Download from www.analogx.com WinWinner WinWinner is a system
configuration or ‘tweaking’ utility that allows to fine-tune,
configure and personalise hundreds of Windows ’95/’98/’98 SE/ME
settings. It covers a wide range of options that give a complete command
over the system. It allows you to supercharge the system by giving a
wide range of options that allow you to tweak-up Windows shell,
hardware, office products like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Word,
Windows Media Player etc. It lets you customise Desktop, Start Menu,
Taskbar etc. There are not many tweaking utilities that give you so much
freedom to change these settings. But
the question is why should these be changed at all? This is because
those who write Windows and other such products do so on the basis of
what they think the user will require and not what the user actually
requires. That is why users on the basis of their experience write
tweaking utilities. Interestingly, this freeware has been written by a
young Indian IT student, Ravi Gyani. Please note that this works for
Win9x and ME only. Download is available from http://buzzys.net/winwinner.zip |
