Chandrashekhar a match-winner: Goel
Rohtak, July 24 Giving his reaction to NCR Tribune on Wisden nominations here today, ‘Mr Accurate’ described him as a ‘real match-winner’. He said that Chandra was instrumental in scripting several Indian victories at home and abroad. “He could bowl with the speed of a pacer. Googly and full toss were his main weapons, which consumed the bulk of opponents’ wickets in Test cricket during the 70s,” said Goel. He said spinners in those days did not get adequate support from the fielders and fielding standards were not so high in those days. Had Chandra played in today’s era, he would have claimed an unbelievable number of wickets. He also expressed satisfaction on the nomination of G.R. Vishwanath. Goel said, “Vishy always supported the sportsman spirit”. In the meantime, cricket enthusiasts in this city spent a busy day here today discussing Wisden’s declarations made on Tuesday night. People were seen discussing the achievements of Kapil Dev who, incidentally, made his Ranji Trophy debut in 1976-77 playing here at Vishwarma Stadium against Punjab while representing Haryana in domestic cricket. When NCR Tribune tried to know the reaction of a cross- section of society, it was observed that the choice of the younger generation was Sachin and not Kapil as Indian Cricketer of the Century. Sandhya Juneja, a BCA student, described Sachin as a big run getter and entertainer. She said Sachin should have been a better choice. In the local Kath Mandi area, where people are considered cricket crazy, the declaration of Kapil Dev as Indian Cricketer of the Century was well received. The elders having adequate knowledge of cricket seemed emotionally attached to Kapil.

In fine fettle, Karun Chandhok closes in on third place New Delhi, July 24 In testing, Chandhok was very impressive and was in second place just two tenths of a second behind first place winner Adam Carroll, despite having only three hours to learn the track. He was very happy with the balance in the car and was confident of challenging the top slot this week-end. On Saturday morning, for the first qualifying session, the track started off very wet and was drying, which basically meant that whoever did the last lap of the session would have the best track conditions. Unfortunately for Karun, sponsored by J K Tyres, he was the first person to finish the session and so the people behind him were able to make better use of the conditions and that bumped him down to sixth. In the second qualifying session, the T-Sport driver earned the reputation of being the “cone-king of F3” when on his third lap of qualifying, he went wide at the 180kmh first chicane and knocked down six cones by the side of the circuit, breaking not only the front wing, but this also bent the suspension causing the car’s alignment to change. Still, he went back out with just three minutes to go and on the very last lap of the session put in a blinder to take third place on the grid. “The first qualifying was a bit of a lottery and unfortunately I was the first to get the flag so we ended up being further down than where we should’ve been. The second qualifying was also not as good as it could’ve been, but still I’m happy with a top three position. When I knocked those cones down I thought there was too much damage to go back out and set a time but the team were just amazing and got the car out in time for me to set a laptime. The tyres weren’t fully up to working conditions, yet I think we could’ve gone faster for sure”, observed Karun. At the end of lap one, Karun had moved up from sixth to second and over the next two laps, places were interchanged at every corner. On lap 4, Billy Asaro moved ahead of Karun, only to go wide at the very next corner and when Chandhok moved to pass him, Asaro came across and hit him, causing the alignment to go out of shape once again. This incident caused Karun to drop down to sixth. After a safety-car period of four laps, Karun charged back past Robert Dahlgren, Gavin Smith and Stephen Colbert up to second place before dropping a place to Dahlgren. He stayed in third place till the flag to score 12 precious points. In race 2, Karun made a blinding start to pass Dahlgren into the first corner. Going into the final hairpin, Chandhok was T-boned by Dahlgren who tried an overambitious move down the inside. This dropped Chandhok down the order and he finished a very angry sixth place. Karun said, “There was no reason for Robert to try that. He knew there was no place and it just ruined my race. I spoke to him afterwards and he said that the brake bias was not right on his car so he couldn’t stop and he apologised but still I think that it was an avoidable incident which I am really upset about. There’s nothing I can do about it now anyway. In the last few races, I’ve been consistent in the top three and I’m beginning to put some pressure on them and I’m sure guys like Robert, who aren’t used to being beaten by me, are not happy when I’m ahead. Still, the only way for me to establish myself as one of the front-runners is to continue progressing the way I have so far this season in qualifying and in the races”. There is now a four-week break in the championship, which gives Karun his first well-deserved trip back to India since the start of the season. “We have one test at the end of this month and after I get back home for some good warm weather and Indian food it’ll be good for me to recharge my batteries and come back fresh for Oulton Park on August 18”, Karun added. |
