Accommodation trouble in Civil Hospital
Kulwinder Sangha

SAS Nagar, July 24
Even though the work of shifting the indoor wings of the Civil Hospital here to the new block is almost complete, the building still lacks space to accommodate the planned 100 beds and the hospital faces staff shortage.

The process of shifting started about a month ago beginning with the emergency wing.

In the 100-bed hospital building only 70 beds can be accommodated. Doctors say efforts will be made to adjust some more beds.

It is learnt that under the original plan the hospital was to be five- storeyed with provision to accommodate 200 beds. However, the new block is only double-storeyed and that is why the problem of space is arising.

The hospital also faces day-to-day problems due to staff shortage. Although the number of doctors is adequate, all of them are specialists and there are no EMOs (emergency medical officers). As such, specialists have to perform night duties which adversely affects the OPD work.

According to norms set for 100-bed hospitals, there should be three EMOs besides 20 staff nurses, 50 Class IV employees, four clerks, a head clerk, an accountant, a stenographer, a cashier, an OT attendant, three ‘chowkidar’ and two laboratory attendants. The other staff needed includes a cook, two ‘dhobis’, an electrician, a plumber and a carpenter. However, the hospital at present has only nine staff nurses, 18 Class IV employees and one clerk.

Dr Manjeet Singh Bains, in charge of the hospital, says more pharmacists and staff nurses are being posted at the hospital. The two new operating theatres (OTs) are being subjected to “swab tests” to check their sterility and would soon become functional. It was decided at a meeting of the Punjab Health Systems Corporation on July 8 that swab tests would be done monthly instead of quarterly to insure quality assurance.

The Ropar Civil Surgeon, Dr Harinder Rana, said the hospital had been provided with expensive equipment for laparoscopic surgery. In addition, diagnostics aids like the colposcope and the hyteroscope had also been purchased. It would be insured that such equipment is put to proper use for the benefit of the patients. The SMO had been asked to send a list of requirements which she would try to fulfil. The corporation was aware of the hospital norms and was expected to make the necessary arrangements.

Number of cholera patients goes up
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 24
Even as the number of patients admitted to city hospitals undergoing treatment for cholera went up to 166 today with 37 new admissions, UT Administration has located the source of contamination of the drinking water supply, which had ‘caused’ cholera.

A team of the Health Department and Municipal Corporation officials located the source in house no. 2350 at Dadu Majra, here from where the drinking water supply of the area was being contaminated with faeces.

According to sources, the Adviser to the Administrator, Ms Neeru Nanda, who visited the site has squarely blamed some residents of Sector 52 and Dadu Majra colonies for the outbreak of cholera on account of their unclean way of living. She reportedly was livid with some of the residents and has decided to take stern action against anyone who is found to be causing contamination of drinking water.

While 12 patients suffering from diarrhoea and cholera related symptoms were admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, 25 patients with similar symptoms were admitted to General Hospital, Sector 16.

The number of those admitted with cholera like symptoms has thus gone up to 64 at GMCH-32 and the number of confirmed cases here is now 30. The test reports of the other patients are still awaited. However, the rest of them have shown a positive indication to the initial screening test for cholera. While 10 out of the 12 new cases reported have come from Sector 52, one case has been reported from colony number 5 and one case from Nalagarh. However, sources in the hospital state that the Nalagarh case has been screened negative for the initial test of cholera but continues to show similar symptoms.

At GH-16, the total number of those admitted has gone up to 102 and out of the 25 admitted today, 11 are from Dadu Majra Colony, 11 from Sector 52 and three from other areas. The hospital has confirmed 13 cases as cholera while the reports of others is awaited.

Two mobile dispensaries treated more than 400 patients in Sector 52 and Dadu Majra colonies today. According to the Health Department sources, more than 20,000 packs of ORS solution have been distributed.

Dr G. Dewan, Deputy Medical Superintendent, General Hospital, Sector 16, said the Health Department would organise special free treatment camps at Maloya, Ram Darbar, Indira Colony, Bapu Dham, Mauli Jagran, Dhanas and Guala Colony tomorrow.

SAS Nagar: No cases of cholera have been reported at the Civil Hospital, Phase VI, here. According to sources, a team of the Health Directorate visited the hospital and asked for the patients who had come to the hospital last week with similar symptoms. The Chief Medical Officer of the hospital said no case of cholera had been reported in the last one week at the hospital. However according to sources, 6 persons had come with gastroenterities symptoms but the cases were attributed to seasonal diarrhoea.

The Civil Hospital in charge has as a precautionary measure sent letters to the Municipal Council stating that the levels of chlorine in the water supply be maintained and extra care be taken to check leakage in sewerage pipes. The council has forwarded the note to the Public Health Department office which is responsible for the chlorination of drinking water in the township. The council has also been told to take immediate action in case of leakage so that the sewerage water does not mix with the drinking water lines.

Meanwhile, few residents of the two main colonies adjoining Sector 52 which fall in SAS Nagar, Guru Nanak Colony and Amb Sahib Colony, were aware of any outbreak of cholera in the nearby colony. Many residents said no team of doctors or health workers had visited their colony.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the Health Department, Chandigarh Administration, have issued the following general instructions for residents of Chandigarh.
