Looking back

To spin a yarn means to tell a long tail which is incredible. The origin of the phrase is related to marine life. In earlier days, in their free time, sailors were made to spin yarn from old ropes. These yarns were not very strong and could not be used as ropes but only for caulking seams. Thus to spin a yarn, is to tell a tale that is not reliable.
