Reflectors fixed on vehicles
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, July 18
In a special campaign to implement directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to paste reflectors on all slow-moving vehicles, more than 3,000 reflectors were fixed on vehicles last week.

According to Mr M. S. Sandhu, DTO in charge of the campaign, at the initial stage, people were educated and explained the importance of reflectors since these, to a large extent, prevent night-time accidents.

He said 4,500 reflectors were procured by the administration for the purpose and fixed on vehicles free of cost. The campaign was launched by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Agarwal.

Besides reflectors, around 1,000 stickers have been pasted on tractor-trolleys, 1,200 on rickshaws, 650 on bicycles and 150 on horse — carts moving in and around the city. He further said a private company had agreed to prepare such reflectors in sufficient quantity and to provide 4 x4’’ size reflectors for big vehicles @ Rs 8/- and small size reflectors @ Rs 2/- per sticker for bicycles.

Mr Sandhu informed that the campaign was also being extended to the sub division levels, where SDMs would cover all such vehicles with the involvement of voluntary organisations. He said two teams, each headed by ADTOs of his office, would also continue to check the vehicles to ensure that each vehicle had a reflector fitted on it. He appealed to the owners of these vehicles to get the reflectors fixed since it was in their benefit and would also help in saving a large number of lives lost because of accidents involving slow-moving vehicles at night.

Sanitation campaign gets underway
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, July 18
In preparation for the onset of rainy season, the Municipal Corporation has launched sanitation campaign under the supervision of the respective Zonal Commissioners in the city. The campaign, with special emphasis on improvement in sanitation level in public streets and roads, will continue till August 31.

While inaugurating the campaign at the Clock Tower chowk, the MC Zonal Commissioner (Zone A), Mr O.A.K. Sondhi, made an appeal to the shopkeepers not to throw garbage and filth on roads and streets and to make use of dustbins and garbage containers, provided for this purpose. He sought the cooperation of the residents and shopkeepers to make a city a better and cleaner place to live in.

Meanwhile, the Ludhiana Seva Sangh has alleged that certain safai workers were throwing garbage in the open drain in New Shivaji Nagar as a matter of routine, while the Sanitary Inspector of the area was issuing indiscriminate challans to shopkeepers on this account in order to harass them. Showing copies of summons issued by the court in the name of some shopkeepers in the locality and the receipts for penalty paid by them, the sangh president, Mr Suresh Gupta, said the photographs of safai worker throwing garbage in the drain were available with them.
