Last-minute charging of fee irks students
Geetanjali Gayatri
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 11
A delay in charging sports hostel fee from students has cost the Government College for Girls, Sector 11, dear. Parents of final-year students of the college are irked by the demand for fee by the college authorities at the time of issuing of the detailed marks certificate (DMC).

To make up for the time lost, the college, in principle, has decided to issue the DMC and character certificate to the students only after a no-dues certificate has been secured from them. However, this is being made available to students only once they pay Rs 50 as sports hostel fee after which they are entitled to their marks card and certificate.

While Rs 50 towards the same fund was charged by the college from all students in the December instalment of the fee, the remaining sum was almost forgotten till the session came to an end. Once the preparatory leave started, the college authorities found it difficult to recover the pending sum and worked out the timing.

Panjab University had directed all affiliated colleges to charge Rs 100 from students on a one-time basis as per the decision of the Senate in March, 2001. The sum was to be charged as contribution towards the sports hostel fee for 2001-02.

While most other city colleges charged the sum and deposited it with the university at the beginning of the session, the collection was delayed in the case of GCG-11 and the first installment was taken in December. The college had to resort to last-minute collections in case of students of the outgoing class to meet the target sum.

“We are collecting the funds due from Part I and II of various classes in the new academic session. However, there was no alternative in the case of outgoing class and the money was being collected as per the directions from the university,’’ the Principal, Ms Mohini Sharma, said.

When contacted, the Assistant Director, Sports, Panjab University, Dr Kewal Singh, said the university had decided to construct a sports hostel for all sports persons visiting the university.

“Everytime we hold a sports meet, we have to accommodate them in various hostels. It is high time we had one of our own. For this, we have asked all colleges affiliated with Panjab University to chip in and contribute towards the cost. A circular to this effect was sent to the respective colleges well in advance,’’ he added.

SOPU threatens stir over fee hike
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 11
The Students Organisation of Panjab University has threatened to launch an agitation in case the university did not roll back the fee hike beyond 10 per cent as assured earlier.

This was stated by Harveer Singh, president, while addressing a press conference here today. He said: “in case the university assured to take students into confidence, we would join them in pursuing the sharing governments to release the required amounts for the university. We can go on warpath in its support. However, a fee hike without consultation with the students was unfair. It was pertinent in the light that fee by students was only a very small portion of the total budget”.

He said the existing fee for M Phil was Rs 620 whereas the proposed hike was ‘massive at Rs 4,000’. Students for PhD in medical stream would now pay Rs 5,000 against the earlier fee of Rs 2,065.

Likewise, the university has hiked the fee for the second and third years in law course from Rs 63 to Rs 70 only. However, in case of the first year the fee was revised at Rs 160. Similar increase has been witnessed in the department of Bio-Technology.

Harveer said the students expected an immediate university action or it should be ready to face agitation. The university Syndicate which met recently had given approval to the proposed hike. It is pointed out in wake of the shrinking government grants, the university had no other option but to go in for a fee hike.

Odissi dance troupe binds audience
Parbina Rashid

Chandigarh, July 11
If you associate classical dances with sniffling yawns, then tonight’s Odissi performance at Pracheen Kala Kendra could be an eye opener for you with the repercussion of yesterday’s melodious evening by ghazal singer Dinesh Mahavir and the magic of tabla player Avirbhav Verma still to die down, the kendra presented another sizzling performance of Odissi dance on the occasion of its 66th Monthly Baithak Programme at its complex in Sector 35 here this evening.

Mudras and different “bhangimas” of Konark and Lord Jagannath temples of Orissa came alive as five girls and three boys from Patitapawan Kala Kendra from Delhi presented items showing commendable body movements dipped in “lasya” and “tandava raas”. The flexibility and synchronisation exhibited by each individual dancer could startle a professional acrobat.

“The original mudras of Odissi that evolved from the statues at temples are mesmerising enough as “lasya” is the dominant factor in them but we are trying to make this particular form of dance more interesting by incorporating items based on the theme of environment, natural disasters like super cyclone that has left a series of destruction in Orissa and others,” says Parvesh Kumar Mohanty, the guru and the leader of the troupe.

Parvesh Mohanty who has been teaching Gotipua style of Odissi to his students at Patittapawan Kala Niketan is a famous dancer himself. But tonight he preferred to remain in the shadow of his students, providing them with the strength on their maiden performance in Chandigarh.

Under the guidance of Mohanty, the troupe started with the traditional invocatory item “Mangalacharan”. The team managed to capture the attention of the audience with its performance.

It was followed by “Gotipua” in which the star dancer of the troupe, Master Rajnikant, who has won an all-India gold medal, dressed up as a girl, teamed up with another expert dancer Pushpanjali Mohanty. They displayed their command over ‘abhinaya’ with their arresting body movements.

“Sthayee Nrutya” an all-male dance number in the Guru Deba Prasad Das style, was presented without any song or recitation but only a rhythmic syllable, which lent some extra power to the aggressive footwork of the dancers. Solo items “Pallavi” and “Mokshya” also proved highly interesting.

The performers included Manjeet, Seema, Siaka, Putli, Master Rajnikant Mohanty, Prakash Kumar Mohanty, Pushpanjali Mohanty and Santosh Kumar Mohanty. The dancers were accompanied by Bankim Sethi on vocal, Prafulla Kumar Mangaraj on Pakhawaj and Raj Kishore on flute.

Digital art exhibition opens in city
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 11
The first-ever digital art exhibition in the region opened in the city today at IndusInd Art Gallery, heralding the arrival of digital art as a form of art. The exhibition pulled in a lot many students, specially from fine arts, on the first day. The digital art gives you the advantage of experimentation, a vast range of colours (a computer has millions of colours, only reality has more), a fast idea to result duration (helping you in the process of creativity as you can strike when the idea is hot), says Vineet Raj Kapoor, the arena academic head, Sector 17. "In the end, the idea wins the battle against the medium. In the other traditional mediums many a time the idea is the loser due to the long process involved, and the human nature where priorities keep changing with time."

At the exhibition "The Digital Art Arena", the work of 8 artists is on display. Ajaydeep Singh, Kulwinder, Alok Jain, Ravineet Mann, and Megha Sharma are the students of Arena, Sector 17, whose works are on display at the IndusInd Art Gallery, Sector 8, Chandigarh. The student's work includes realist art, portraits (also remakes), illustration art, and geometric design experimenting with light.

The works of Yadbinder Singh Sian and Jaspreet Singh who are faculties at the Centre are also on display. They have explored 3D Studio Max and Adobe Photoshop to create their works. Vineet's own work is also on display. He uses Adobe Illustrator to it's art potential max.
