Hans Dietrich Gencher
by Ranga

HANS Dietrich Gencher who earned a name as the longest-serving German Foreign Minister resigned after exactly 25 years as a minister. A tireless traveller, his visits to the United States of America have often eclipsed those of Chancellor Helmut Kohl because Gencher speaks fluent English while Kohl does not. After East Germany’s peaceful revolution in 1989, Gencher played a key role in rallying international support for the unification of the communist East Germany with the prosperous West Germany.

Gencher has visited India more than once. He visited Delhi in 1981 and met many leaders. Before he left he held a press conference in which he was at ease with mediapersons. It is at this time that I made a sketch of him which I presented to him soon after the press conference. He was happy and responded with his signature on the sketch. He took a similar one back home with him.
