PoK-based Hizb ‘sabotaged’ ceasefire

Srinagar, July 5
Deposed chief commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, Abdul Majid Dar, today blamed the PoK-based leadership of the outfit responsible for derailment of the ceasefire announced by the outfit in July, 2000.

"When I announced the ceasefire on the directions of the leadership from across the border the situation took a turn for worse overnight. Across the border, secret meetings and discussions took place which ultimately led to the withdrawal of the ceasefire", Dar told a local daily.

He said there was unanimity in the Hizbul Mujahideen for ceasefire as "We had taken the step after due thought and I was deputed to Kashmir from across the border to consult the commanders here. After completing my mission, I was asked to announce the ceasefire from across the border."

"And when I did that, the situation took a turn for worse overnight, across the border secret meetings and discussions took place .... I cannot make public the stark realities ... For which I was left high and dry alone’’, he said. PTITop

Tribune News Service

Srinagar, July 5
Even though seven years have passed, the Jammu and Kashmir police had failed to trace four of the six foreign tourists who were kidnapped by Al-Faran from the Aroo area of Pahalgm in South Kashmir district of Anantnag on July 4, 1995.

They were two British tourists Keith Mangan and Paul Wells, an American, Donald Hutchings and a German, Dirk Hasert. Two others kidnapped along with them were American John Childs, who was rescued four days later, and a Norwegian tourist, Hans Christan Ostro, whose body was removed near Pahalgam on August 13, 1995.

Several national and international organisations had issued appeals to Al-Faran to release the tourists. Representatives of the embassies of these countries also visited Kashmir frequently to seek the release. But in vain.

Haj complex to be built in Srinagar

Srinagar, July 5
A modern Haj complex, providing all facilities under one roof, will soon come up here. The Haj complex, to be built at a cost of Rs 11 crore, will provide facilities like immigration clearance, customs clearance, cargo, foreign exchange counters and other amenities under one roof.

This information was given at a high-level meeting held here yesterday under the chairmanship of Minister for Works, Ali Mohammad Sagar, who headed the Indian Haj delegation last year.

The pilgrims will fulfil all necessary formalities at the complex and board the flights without any hurdles at the airport.

Speaking at the meeting, the minister said there was an urgent need to have a complex here as all pilgrims from the state flew from the Srinagar airport directly to Jeddah.

He said Rs 1.50 crore would be earmarked for the construction of the complex during the current year.

The meeting was informed that 20 kanals of land had been acquired at Bemina for the construction of the complex. UNITop

9 hurt in lathi charge

Jammu, July 5
Nine persons were injured when the police resorted to lathi charge on Kashmiri migrants who had blocked the Jammu-Akhnoor road while demonstrating against the disrupted power supply in the Mishriwala camp near here. The police said they resorted to minor cane charge to disperse the demonstrators who had disrupted the vehicular traffic by staging dharna near Mishriwala yesterday.

However, a delegation of Mishriwala camp said here that police lobbed some tear gas shells and lathi-charged on peaceful migrants who were staging a dharna on the road in support of their demand for replacing a damaged transformer and restoration of power supply in the camp. PTI
