Kidney-size stone removed from child’s kidney
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 2
Three-year-old Varun Attri’s parents could not have imagined that their son , having a stone as big as the kidney itself, could be discharged within two hours after his operation.

It was after making repeated rounds of various government hospitals, including the PGI, that they decided to approach Dr P.N. Gupta, a city-based urologist, to handle their son’s case. With a child as small as Vasu, having a 50 mm stone which had taken up the shape of his kidney, Mr Shashi Attri left it upon Dr Gupta to decide the procedure that was to be adopted for removing the stone.

Claiming to be a pioneer in conducting retro peritoneal laparoscopy in the northern region, he has during the last one year performed almost a dozen operations with this latest technique. It will be starting this procedure shortly. “Apart from the fact that the cost is barely Rs 15,000, the biggest advantages are that it does not require any incision or blood, with discharge the very next day after operation,” explains Dr Gupta.

It was at Thomas Jefferson University, USA, that Dr Gupta received his training in this latest technique, where you only need to puncture the abdomen to go behind to the peritoneum. The most prevalent surgery being performed by urologists at present is the Uroscopy ( URS), which Dr Gupta had started way back in 1993.Technically being a complicated procedure the retro peritoneal laparoscopy requires expertise and specialisation.

Assuring a success rate of 80 per cent in this procedure, which is very advanced , Dr Gupta says that contrary to the belief that it is very expensive, the cost is just the same as in the case of a normal surgery for removing stone from the kidneys. “ The case of three-year-old Vasu, was unique in the sense that I had to put a 5 FR French DJ stent to crush the huge stone,” he states.

In yet another case of Gurmeet Kaur from Ropar, who had a 20 mm stone in her kidney, Dr Gupta had no option but to go in for laproscopic surgery instead of open surgery. Being a diabetic patient ,the case of 38 year old Gurmeet Kaur was not easy as a ureteric stone had been removed with the help of URS in the year 1995.After her operation on July, 1, she got her discharge today from Dr Gupta’s surgical centre .

Dr Gupta, was also one of the first person to perform Transvaporisation of prostrate gland in the year 1996, for which the latest and most sophisticated equipment is required.
