Q I have done one-year course of e-commerce from Chandimandir. Besides different programs covered under this course we were taught only the basics of Visual Basic program. I am keenly interested in studying VB in detail. For which, I require some expert guidance. Will you be kind enough to enlighten me in this respect and guide me if there is any website where from I can learn the program in detail.

A Visual Basic is one of the easiest programming tool to master. Visual Basic enables us to create rich applications for Microsoft Windows in less time, it is an easy way for data access from a wider range of database, it create components with minimal code. http://msdn.microsoft.com/ is the best solution for all kind of queries related to Microsoft products. All the information about the Microsoft's Visual Basic can be downloaded from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/. There are many separate sections where we can understand and learn Visual Basic. Q I have P III 650 and ASUS 810E/2 main board. I'm having problem while booting from my Seagate hard disk. It had 2 partitions - one for Windows other for Linux. Linux crashed. I formatted both partitions and loaded Win 2k. But there is some problem with LILO. I can't boot from hard disk even after installing Win '98 and Win 2k several times. Could you please help me out?

Maninder Kaur, Ludhiana

A There could be many problems associated with loading operating system with LILO. You need to give the exact error message, as it will provide the necessary clue for solving the problem. Sometime, the LILO freezes at LI screen. Sometimes it fails to load and create problems. It may also give some internal errors, or even BIOS can signal an error when LILO is trying to load a boot image. So, you must specifically mention the error message in order to help us solve the problem.

Q I have an assembled PC - 20 GB HDD, Mercury 810 motherboard, Samsung floppy drive and LG CD ROM. A few days ago my system halted while booting and it stopped booting. I formatted the hard disk and did partitions again. I installed '98 SE. The system was OK except the sound system. I installed sound drivers from the main board CD but it did not work. Again I installed thinking that it will itself pick drivers. But the problem still persists. On running videos in media player the file starts playing but the sound does not emanate. On winamp it gives an error mmsystem002 device id out of range. Kindly help.

A Your sound card software is probably not installed on your computer. Check for this with the following steps:

From the Windows taskbar, click the start button. From the start menu, select settings. From the settings menu, select Control Panel. From the Control Panel, double click on system. In the System Properties dialog box, select the Device Manager tab. In the list of devices, look between port and system device. There should be an entry for sound, video and game controllers. If it is not there, the software for your sound card is not installed. Now you can install the driver from here with the CD provided along with motherboard manufacturer.

Q I have a computer with following configuration - Windows 98, Pentium I, 166 MHz processor, 20 GB hard disk with three partitions - 64 SD RAM. Every time I start the computer, it goes into the Windows startup menu and asks for the option to choose from normal, bootlog, safemode, step-by-step confirmation etc. It waits for 30 seconds before loading Windows in the normal mode. Please help me in solving this problem

A Your problem could be solved by editing MSDOS.SYS file. Under this file, edit the lines under Options so that the start menu could disappear. Thus to begin with edit MSDOS.sys file and locate the following entries,

[Options]

BootMenu=0

BootMenuDelay=0

BootKeys=1

Make sure that the entries are set as mentioned above. In your case since the BOOT delay is set to 30 seconds, therefore you get the startup menu options for 30 seconds. Reducing this to zero will simply remove the delay and will solve your problem.

Q I have a PC with 766 MHz Celeron. Whenever I try to copy a CD onto my PC, it gives the message, "unable to find the path avesq01.or it might be shifted recently". I am unable to understand why it occurs. The second problem that occurs is that whenever I switch on the computer it gives the message "To reboot the system for normal functioning." And I have to go through the whole process again.

Jovial

A From the description of your problem, it appears that you are trying to copy the file Avsq01, which is probably a track of a Video CD from a location, which is not the actual path, which could be even a shortcut. However, in reality the file does not exist and only it is reflected in your system. Either this file is deleted from its actual location or it is being displaced to some other location. This error is due to this reason only. Kindly check out the exact path, you can also use the search option in Start Menu to locate the exact path of this file.

Q I have a computer with the following configuration-assembled P III, 866 MHz, 815 E motherboard, 256 MB RAM. I have Windows '98 operating system. Firstly, whenever, I tried to open Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Front Page, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word from

c:\ windows\ Startmenu\ programs, Windows is unable to open the above mentioned file and the following message appears - "The Windows installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact your system administrator." Secondly, please tell me name of trustworthy software so that I can increase the speed of the Internet. Currently my ISP is HCLINFINET.

Prateek Jindal, Rohtak, (Haryana).

A You are trying to open these files incorrectly. Instead you should locate the files under the Microsoft office folder in program files in their respective directories. You will find the executable files of these programs at these locations only. Trying to open these program from the source mentioned is not valid. Regarding, your second problem, I would request you to kindly elaborate the details, of your Internet and specific problem. The information to be furnished by you should also have information about your modem and the connection speed also.

Q I have Intel 810 motherboard on my PC and Celeron 450 MHz Processor. My PC is not working. There is no display in monitor and no beeps. SMPS is working properly. Sometimes a cursor occurs after a long time (45 Min. to 1 Hour) and nothing on the screen. What could be the problem? Kindly suggest me the solution. Is it a BIOS problem?

Vinod Kiroriwal

A There could be many reasons, for this kind of problem and the most prominent being that the VGA or AGP card installed on your system has developed some snags and you need to get it checked with your hardware vendor. You can check this problem by putting in an extra AGP card in your system. If your system boots normally, then you can attribute this problem to your AGP/VGA card. However, if the new card represents this problem also, then the finger of suspicion could point towards some problem in your motherboard. Basically this seems to be a hardware-related problem.

Q I have a PC with the following configuration - Celeron 556 MHz, 10 GB space, Logitech PS/2 mouse, 64 MB RAM and Windows '98 as OS. I am facing a problem since last few days. Whenever I start my computer a message appears: "Your mouse is not attached, please attach it now or switch the computer off then attach it." When I check it, I see that the mouse is attached to the port. Then I click on the OK button and mouse starts works properly. I tried to check whether it was the problem of the drivers from device manager system folder in control panel. When I clicked on the mouse option a window opened that said that the drivers are function properly. After sometime I again tried to check but the other time the mouse option wasn't there. What should I do? From where can I install my mouse drivers? Please help.

Shataksh Sharma, Delhi

A From the description of your problem, it appears to me that you have installed some program recently on your system, which is causing this problem. Some programs, mainly shareware sometimes clash with some drivers in your system and overwrite them with its own files, which in turn causes the problem in that device. Since in your case, the mouse starts functioning again, this means that the Windows automatically detects the driver for your mouse and loads it. But when that program gets loaded, this driver gets corrupted again, thus causing problem in your system. The best way to solve this problem is to remove the errant program completely from your system. However, you can also try loading the default settings or fail-safe settings in the BIOS feature setup to troubleshoot this problem.
