Protect executable files with password
Raman Mohan

WINDOWS versions have two big limitations that frustrate many users. Firstly, the right click file menu's Send To option has fixed choices. You cannot move a file of your choice to a folder of your choice. This makes moving of files to the folders of your choice a cumbersome task. Secondly, there is no password protection for executable files. Here are two freeware that take care of these two limitations.

SendTo 1.5

This is a handy utility that installs itself to the Windows "Send To" menu under a new option labelled "Any Folder." The Windows built-in right click menu only allows you to send any file to either 3.5" floppy, desktop, mail recipient, My Documents or a few programs like Word. But when you install SendTo 1.5 it allows the copying, moving or creation of shortcuts to any files to a single destination directory of choice through the use of the Windows Send To menu. The program also allows the copying of files from the computer or local network to an FTP server on the Internet. Besides it can send files on the local computer to any application. All you have to do is to select the destination directory using the familiar Windows explorer interface, with customisable icon views (large, small, details, list, etc). It gives quick access to previously used destinations through the use of a drop-down menu like that of Internet Explorer's address bar. With it you get more quick access to commonly used destinations by allowing to add a destination you pick directly to the Windows Send To menu. You may also start SendTo with a listing of the drives or at the last destination directory you used. The program will automatically create new directories if the path entered in the Path bar does not exist. It has a number of security related features. These include: Disable manual entering of destination directories, disable "Move" option, Options button, so people cannot change the SendTo options, disable "Add to Send To Menu" option, so destination directories cannot be added directly to the Windows Send To menu and disable users from creating new directories with SendTo. ExeLock Express

This freeware will take any Windows program and lock it with a password. Once the program is locked it cannot be run without the password. Locking a program is simple - Run ExeLock Express (ExeLockX), select the programs you wish to password protect, enter the password you wish to use (twice to ensure accuracy). When you install ExeLockX it places two shortcuts to run it on your computer. One of these is on your desktop, the other is in your Start menu. Run ExeLockX and press the Browse button to look for the file you want to protect. Once you have selected the file, press the Protect button to continue. You will be prompted for a password. Enter it twice to ensure you have entered it accurately. Press Next to continue. A progress bar will display while the program is being processed. When processing is complete a Test button will be shown. Press this button to run the program and test the password protection. Unlocking a program is similar to locking. Simply run ExeLockX, select the program to unlock, press the Restore button and continue. You will be prompted for the password to the program. It is impossible to unlock a program without the correct password.

But you must remember a few things. After the program is locked, you cannot run it without the password. It is possible to remove the password protection from the program, but you must have the password to unlock it. The password protection operates on executable programs only, not data files.
