Q I have an assembled PC with the following configuration: Intel Celeron 800 MHz 128 MB RAM, Intel 810E Motherboard, 20 GB HDD, 52X Samsung CD-ROM, 1.44 FDD, ATX cabinet, 15'' LG Monitor, 56 KBPS Internal Modem, Windows '98 Operating System

My first problem is whenever I defrag drive C:, it shows 10 per cent complete and then shows "contents of drive has changed, restarting" for more than 10 times. No screensaver or video wallpaper program running in background. What is the solution of my first problem? Please suggest. My second problem is that when I go to command prompt, it doesn't work properly. Sometimes computer hangs and I face various other problems. Please suggest the solution to my problem.

Naveen Goyal, Barnala

A Regarding your first problem, besides screen saver and wallpaper, you should also check that there is no program running in the background. These programs are usually loaded in your system. Thus before attempting to defrag, you should close down all applications by using the task manager. Second possible reason could be the anti-virus program, which could be causing this error. Disable the antivirus program for the time being for carry on with defrag. I hope this will solve your problem. Regarding your second problem, try running command prompt from the RUN menu, as it appears that some program or application has disturbed the setting of the command prompt in your computer.

Q
I have a computer with the following configuration - P III, 733 MHz, 810 E Motherboard, 128 MB RAM, etc with Windows '98 SE. Whenever I start my computer, I get a message, "IDE 80 Conductor cable not installed." What does it mean? Secondly whenever I try to restart my computer, it hangs. I then have to shut it down for a minute or two. Only then it restarts. What's the reason? Please solve my problem.

Rattandeep Ghuman, Jalandhar

A This is a common issue with the HDD connector. If you use the older 40-conductor IDE cable, under the Ultra DMA modes 0, 1 and 2, covering transfer speeds up to 33.3 MB/s. All you need to do is change your older 40-conductor IDE cable to 80-conductor cable. The main reason is that the old 40-conductor IDE cable, has an old and not robust design. Unterminated flat ribbon cables have never been all that great in terms of signal quality and dealing with reflections from the end of the cable. The warts of the old design were tolerable while signalling speeds on the IDE/ATA interface were relatively low, but as the speed of the interface continued to increase, the limitations of the cable were finally too great to be ignored. So you need to change your HDD connector cable for the solution of this problem as for any Ultra DMA modes above mode 2, the 80-conductor cable is required.Regarding your second problem, please load the BIOS default settings in the BIOS set up, I hope this will solve your problem.

Q I have Win '98 as my OS. My configuration is P III, 20 GB HDD, 56 KBP modem. I have downloaded a few zip files from the Net and am not having Winzip or any other software to unzip it. So when the message came to open the file with which software I by mistake selected word. Now how do I open that file. Secondly, whenever I log on to the Net, it takes a lot of time to log on. Thirdly, I want to split a setup of 3D game so that it fits into a floppy disk. How do I do that? I had downloaded the fliesplit software suggested by you but it does not work. Please suggest me some freeware for my problems.

Arjun Guglani

A Regarding your first problem, you will have to load the software like Winzip to unzip these zip files, when you have done so, then you should open my computer and then in the specific drive>directory>sub directory where your file is located and then you should right click on the zipped file, which you would like to unzip. In the drop down menu you will get the option "open with", choose this option and then choose the program, with which you would like to associate the file (winzip in this case). This will solve your problem. Regarding your second problem, please remove the setting "Logon to network" under your modem configuration. This will take care of delays in logging on to the Internet. Regarding your third problem download the program Fsplit from http://software.altexa.com/fsplit.php3. This software will solve your problem.

Q I have done one year course of e-commerce. Besides different programs covered under this course we were taught only the basics of Visual Basic program. I am keenly interested in studying VB in detail. For this I require some expert guidance. Will you be kind enough to enlighten me in this respect and guide me if there is any Website where from I can learn the program in detail? Sir, can you tell me about the Website through which I can be thoroughly introduced to Visual Basic, VB Script and Web designing. Nowadays I am facing a problem with my computer. Whenever I open my gif and jpeg files, my computer fails to open these files. The error often comes that "Check the server name and location (URL) and try again." Kindly let me know how I can overcome this problem and oblige.

A There are many institutes running online courses on various subjects related to computer and information technology. Some of them are user friendly and can be pursued in the convenience of your home. For example www.pcdi-homestudy.com/courses/cp/?code=9943 offers a comprehensive course on Visual Basic. There are many more courses available on the Internet, which you will have to search in the light of your specific requirement and level of expertise because Visual Basic is a very extensive area to study. Regarding your second problem, what I could understand is that you are not able to open the GIF and JPEG files in your browser. You should not enter the name of the image in the location (Address Bar) in your browser. Instead you should use the option File> open in the browser to open the file mentioned by you.

Q I am running a PC clone with Win '95. I have 256 RAM. Recently I began having problems with the screen blinking momentarily. Now it has accelerated to the point that when it blinks, everything stops. The mouse becomes inactive and the screen resets. The blinking takes about 1-2 seconds but greatly impedes the usage. It blinks 2-3 times every 5 minutes, sometimes more frequently. My hardware man installed a new video card, but it this has in no way helped me. I have connected the PC to another monitor but still it does so? The problem is not of monitor either. I have checked the power source, plugging directly into the wall instead of the UPS but no improvement? It is driving me crazy.

A From the description of your problem, it appears to me that this is a memory related problem and has nothing to do with the display card. In my opinion there are three steps to solve this problem. First check your display adapter and reload the display adapter driver again after removing it from your system. Also use the 60 Hz refresh rate as higher frequency could cause problems. Then make sure to reduce the number of colors in display to maximum 16 bit true color, as higher color could also cause this problem. Now check your computer for this problem. If the problem reoccurs, then increase the swap file size as in case of lower swap file size also similar problems could occur. If this also fails to solve your problem, then you can try changing the RAM as blinking could also happen due to faulty RAM.

Q My system configuration is: Intel Celeron 700 MHz processor, 15 GB Hard Drive free space, and Windows ME OS. My problem is that whenever I try to open my floppy drive A:\ , an error comes " A:\ is not accessible. The system cannot read the specified device." What could be the problem? If you could help me, please tell me in a simplified way.

Sunny Brar, Canada

A First of all, try cleaning the floppy drive with the floppy drive cleaning disk. In a majority of the cases, it seems to have done the job. However, if it does not solve your problem, then load the fail safe default settings in BIOS feature setup as it may happen that the floppy drive is not recognised from the beginning. In this case, loading the fail safe default will solve the problem. You can enter the BIOS setup by hitting "Del" when your computer starts. You should also check up the floppy cable for any loose or wrong connection. I hope these solutions will solve your problem.

Q I have a PC with the following configuration - Pentium III, 700 MHz, Tomato motherboard, 192 MB RAM, Motorola internal modem, Win-98, Office '97 and Internet explorer latest version. My first problem is whenever I surf in Internet explorer, it gives the following message (illegal operation). When I press enter its gives me message Kernel 32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL 386.exe at 0001:000075a2. CLOSE. After this when I press enter, my PC hangs up and I had to restart it. Tell me how to get rid this problem. My second problem is that my Internet speed is too slow. Even I am using connect line and connect Internet package. I have tried all software that boosts the Net and browsing speed and modem speed also. My telephone line is totally new without any other joints. Hard disk, RAM is totally free. I have also put S10=60 in extra settings. My browser is also configured to no play sounds, no play animations. I am really bothered about this. Please assist

Vinay Paul

A Regarding your first problem, it could be associated with memory fragmentation problem. This problem sometimes comes up when you open too many memory resident programs at a time and run on your computer. However, it can temporarily be fixed by a complete power-off shut down and then restarting of the computer. You can also try increasing the paging file size for the possible solution of this problem. Regarding your second problem, check out the speed of your com port. Since by default this speed is being set at 9600BPS, so it restricts the speed. Set this speed to maximum and then see the difference.
