V.S. Naipaul

THE Nobel citation said, "V.S. Naipaul is a literary circumnavigator" and this is evident from his books which he has written not with the intent of making money but to fulfil his desire for writing and writing alone.

Naipaul, popularly known as Sir Vaidya (after he got the British Knighthood), was in Delhi recently. Although he belongs to the West Indies, his origin goes back to India and, as expected, he attracted a large number of Indians at one of the public places where he was to deliver his address.

As he stepped down from his car at the entrance of the building, I made a request to him to wait for a few minutes. He obliged and after I made his sketch, I requested him to affix his signature on it, provided he was satisfied with it. With a smile and his wife too beaming with eagerness, he signed on the picture and hurriedly went into the conference hall to meet some well-known writers before he could address the gathering.
