IA sail into Raghubir Cricket quarters

New Delhi, June 2
Defending champions Indian Airlines beat Rajdhani Sports by five wickets to sail into the quarter-final of the 26th Lala Raghubir Singh Hot Weather Cricket Tournament at the Modern School ground, Barakhamba Road, in the Capital today.

India discard Nikhil Chopra, who scored an unbeaten 59 with five fours and two sixes off 67 balls for Indian Airlines, was adjudged the man of the match. DDCA general secretary Sneh Bansal gave away the award.

Rajdhani Sports won the toss and opted to bat. But in 40 overs, they could make only 168 for 7, as the Indian Airlines bowlers kept a tight leash. Rajdhani Sports’ batting was centred around Deepak Anand, who cracked an unbeaten 58 with seven fours. Damanjeet Singh contributed a valuable 33.

Airlines did not have to labour hard to overhaul Rajdhani Sports’ total, as Nikhil Chopra’s knock set the tone and tenor for the runs to flow. Chandan, Vijay Dhaiya and J Arun Kumar contributed handsomely for Airlines’ success.

Their rapid knocks ensured that Airlines reached the winning target in fewer than 30 overs.

Indian Airlines will take on Steel Authority of India Ltd.in their quarter-final match.

‘Soccer Diary’ carries a wealth of information

New Delhi, June 2
The sixth edition of “Soccer Diary”, brought out by the Delhi Veteran Football Club, carries a wealth of information which is very handy in these days of high World Cup soccer fever.

The diary, compiled by the secretary of Veteran Club, Mr Hem Chand, was released by Mr H. J. Dora, Director-General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The present edition, whose launch coincided with the start of the World Cup, is more bulky than the earlier editions. “Soccer Diary” has a special section devoted to the 17th World Cup Soccer Championship being jointly hosted, for the first time ever in Asia, by Korea and Japan.

The diary contains results of the entire previous 16 World Cups, details of total spectators in World Cups (from 1930 to 1998), names of referees who supervised the World Cup final matches, performance of Asian countries in the World Cup, information about the World Cup stadia in Korea and Japan, achievements of participating teams in previous World Cups, names with jersey numbers and position of players of participating teams, details about match schedule, group final table and goal-scorer table.

There is also a detailed section on the sixth edition of the National Football League and the Delhi Soccer Association league.

The book has been dedicated to the late Mr Ashok Khanna, who, as the sports officer of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), had played a key role in the revival of Delhi football.

The book release function was attended by DSA president Umesh Sood, secretary Nasir Ali, former FIFA referees Melvin D’Souza and Rizwan Ul Haq, former players Ranjit Thapa, Aziz Qureshi, Anandi Barua and Tarun Roy.

Haryana bag team title in junior wrestling

Jhajjar, June 2
Junior Boys Free Style and Greco Roman Style and Fifth Girls National Wrestling Championship being held at the Brigadier Hoshiar Singh Stadium in Bahadurgarh, concluded here today. The overall trophy of the championship was bagged by the host state, Haryana, which gains 62 points and 71 points in free style and Greco Roman Style bouts, respectively. Haryana also won the championship of girls Wrestling.

Mr Mahendra Singh Malik, President, Wrestling Federation of India and the Director General of Police, Haryana, was the chief guest on the occasion. The following are the results of the final bouts concluded today in different weight groups.

BBC-AIR tieup on World Cup

New Delhi, June 2
BBC World Service and All India Radio (AIR) have teamed up to cater to World Cup fever. A special World Cup football update service will keep fans up to date on the matches being played in Japan and Korea.

The daily ten minutes’ report in English and Hindi will be broadcast at 10.05 pm (IST) until June 30 (Sunday) on AIR’s Delhi B (medium wave) at 666 KHz. Other AIR stations around the country will carry the round up.

The daily programme includes match reports, analysis and the latest football news from the BBC teams in Japan and South Korea. The first part of the transmission will be in English, and the latter part in Hindi.

Elizabeth Wright, head of Region Asia and Pacific, BBC, said, “The World Service has been covering the World Cup for around 30 years and we know from that experience that football has a wide following in India. We are delighted that by working in partnership with AIR and its extensive radio network, we can give football fans the latest news and information”. OSR

Winsom Cricket Club beat Youngsters Club by five runs in the DDCA A-I Division Super League match at the Ramjas College ground.

Scores: Winsom: 137 for 8 in 35 overs (Lalit Rawat 29 no, Vaibhav Dua 27, Sandeep Rana 22, Sunil Rawat 2 for 29).
