An emerging roller hockey power
Arvind Katyal

Panchkula, June 2
Meet two Panchkula skaters, Amrita Singh and Chandita Kamboj, who are now on the threshold of emerging as one of the strongest roller hockey (skating) power not only in Haryana but in whole India. When this reporter met them at the skating rink of Blue Bird School, Sector 16, both were doing light exercises before getting ready for their hectic evening schedule. Both praised each other’s tactics. Amrita said, ‘Chandita has improved a lot in recent months, specially after the just concluded national camp. Chandita said, “Amrita is the most confident player on the rink and the way she carries the ball, it needs to be complimented.”

They have attended a month-long national roller hockey camp recently at KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, which was coached by Italian coach Baraldi Aldo. Amrita has represented India in the Asian Roller Skating Meet held at Shanghai (China) in 1999 and another Asian meet held at Taiwan in 2001. Earlier, she helped her state in winning various national championships in three national meets held at Chandigarh, Faridabad and Visakhapatnam in 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively. When asked about how she feels about her game after attending the camp, Amrita said it has improved her style and would help her perform better in future.

Chandita Kamboj, now a Class VIII student of Blue Bird School said she was one of the probables last year for the Indian team. However, since she was below 12 years of age so keeping in mind the rules of the International Skating Federation, she could not find berth in the national team. But Chandita has also a good record. She won first place in the National Roller Hockey Meet (under-14) at Visakhatpatnam. Chandita scored six goals in a single match which astonished all those present at the venue.

Chandita said she had also played for Haryana in the women cricket team. Even now in June , she was to go for North Zone cricket camp, which she would have to miss due to second phase of the national roller hockey camp going to begin from June 18.
