They excel in academics too

Three sportspersons who seem to juggle studies and games well are elated with their performances in the class X examination. They claim that active participation in sports is no deterrent to a good academic performance.

A student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, Harneet Singh, has scored a rare double. By scoring 91.2 per cent marks, he has emulated his performance in sports. A former winner of the All-India Tennis Association under-14 and under-16 titles, he has represented Chandigarh in the National School Games a number of times.

Harneet, son of a doctor, attributes his success to proper time management, which includes studies, tennis, Internet and computer games. Harneet attributes his success to his elder brother, grandfather and parents.

A basketball player with a number of wins to her credit, Prabhkiran Dhillon, a student of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, is another student who has secured over 89 per cent. A reputed basketball player, she has represented UT in the National School Games. Prabhkiran said: “All it was four to five hours of daily study with no tuition that helped me achieve this kind of score.” Prabhkiran said she did not stop playing basketball even near her pre-board exams.

Sumanyu Talwar, a student of St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, and a cricket player has also done exceedingly well by securing 88.2 per cent. Sumany said it was regular study with encouragement of his parents that he was able to secure good marks, Sumanyu said his father himself a former national badminton player had always guided him to devote sometime to sports.

LPG transportation charges fixed

The district administration has fixed transportation charges over and above the prevalent retail selling price under the Liquified Petroleum Gas (Regulation and Supply) order, 2000. This has been done following instructions by the government regarding fixing of rates from 15 km to 30 km radius for home delivery of LPG cylinders of 14.2 kg to consumers.

While there have been no additional charges fixed on prevailing retail sale price of Rs 240 within municipal limits, a cash and carry delivery (ex-godown) rebate of Rs 8 per cylinder on prevailing retail sale price has been given.

The transport charges within 8 km from municipal limit have been fixed at Rs 2 per cylinder on prevailing retail sale price and the transport charges per cylinder from MC limit to 15 km has been fixed at Rs 5 per cylinder on prevailing retail sale price and transport charges per cylinder beyond 15 km have been fixed at Rs 8 per cylinder.

The DC, Ms Jyoti Arora, warned LPG dealers not to charge more than the prescribed rates and issue cash memo to each customer, indicating the price of cylinder as well as transportation charges.
