SAI coaches to train kids in govt schools
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, May 24
In an effort to promote sports in UT schools, coaches of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and of the Chandigarh Sports Council, will also now impart training to children in government schools in different disciplines.

According to Mr DS Mangat, DPI Schools, UT, this was long-felt need of the schools. He said it were schools where the real talent was and we had to nurture it. Mr Mangat said the schools and the UT areas, which had been left out, would also be covered in due course as the UT Sports Department was likely to seek the services of more part-time coaches. He said a few days back, he had also discussed with the sports/physical education teachers of these schools about training the students in morning and evening hours in schools. He said majority of them had agreed to the idea.

He opined that once these sports teachers proved their seriousness and commitment, more children would come forward.

On the issue of various complaints regarding the lack of train reservations for the UT team members, which go for the National School Games, Mr Mangat said the real fault was of the School Games Federation of India which many a times, did not inform in time about any cancellation of dates of National School Games. This resulted in their teams facing this problem. Mr Mangat said they normally approached the higher Railway authorities in this connection and whatever best could be done in the circumstances, was always provided to the teams.

Mr Mangat said he hoped for more joint efforts in sports promotion in coordination with UT Sports Department like upgrading of equipment to be used in schools.

He was of the view that efforts had to be initiated to streamline the sports in schools and the decision to provide the coaches was in that direction only. He said these coaches would be answerable for their monthly attendance and their performance record to the Joint Director Sports, UT, or the District Sports Officer through their respective heads of the institution concerned were they were posted.

Coaches for different disciplines appointed in various government educational schools are, athletics (Iqbal Singh — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, (thrice a week-evening hours); badminton (Manju Ghai) — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 (in both sessions); basketball (Paramjit Kaur) — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16 (evening); cricket (SS Bawa) — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 27 (thrice a week); DC Worrell — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 (morning) and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32 (evening); football (Dinesh Kumar) — GMSSS-22 (morning); gymnastics — GMHS, Sector 10, (morning); handball (Iqbal Singh) — GMSS-44 (morning) and GMHS-42, (evening); Onkar Singh — GMHS-35 (morning) and GSSS-23 (evening); Mohinder Lal — GMHS-40 (morning) and GGSSS-21(evening); hockey (Kusum) — GMSSS-20 (morning) and GMSSS-44 (evening); judo (Krishan Lal) — GMSSS-21(morning); kabaddi (Pawan Kumar) — GSSS, Dhanas; kho-kho (DS Kohli) — GMSSS-35 (morning) and GMHS-42 (evening); lawn tennis (Gurvarinder Singh) — GMSSS-16; volleyball ( Suresh Kumar) — GMHS-26 (morning) and (Subhadra Chauhan) — GMSSS-47(morning).

IT Dept seals bank lockers of wine trader
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 24
Sleuths of the Income Tax department today sealed six bank lockers of the family members and partners of Ladda Liquors. They also opened one bank locker from which jewellery worth a few lakh was recovered.

Ladda Liquors is a local liquor trader whose house, offices and 16 kiosks in Chandigarh were raided yesterday by the Income Tax Department. Sources said the income from just the ahatas adjoining the 16 kiosks of the group had been calculated in the range of Rs 75 lakh per year. And still the department was collating figures about profits made from sales of liquor.

The group owns 16 kiosks and figures will run into a couple of crore of rupees. Interestingly, the source added that the income tax returns in the past couple of years had not reflected even a very small portion of the actual income.

Without giving an exact figure of the income declared by the company, the source added, it was less than Rs 5 lakh. It was this figure which had shocked the Income Tax Department when it fished out the income tax returns of the family which own the company.

The Director General, Investigation, North Western Region, Mr C.K. Vohra, said ‘‘We are sure of getting to the bottom of all this.’’

Meanwhile, sleuths have seized keys of lockers from the house which may be of bank lockers.
